I spent my two week R&R from Afghanistan, in Guayaquil and Salinas. Wow.

Two major events in Japan and one in Ecuador in three days, hopefully this isn't the start of something big. :(

The people of Guayaquil were very hospitable when I visited there many years ago. Prayers go out to them all.

Death tolls this high is sadly a fact of life in many less-developed countries. Look at what happened at Port-au-Prince in Haiti in 2010 and the historic city of Bam in Iran in 2003--the lack of earthquake-safe structures resulted in an unimaginable casualty toll. :-(

Myanmar (Burma) had a major earthquake on the 14th, I believe. So, a big (6.9) in Burma, two 7.0 earthquakes in Japan, one 7.8 in Ecuador. Earth is stretching itself.
