When will Western journalists and diplomats and Secretaries of State and even Presidents going to understand that until Islam has it's Reformation, there will be no civil society in the Arab world. We will either see strong dictators or Sunni-Shia sectarian conflict or terrorism...actually some combination of all three.

Well BB,

The Russians sure opposed the peaceful protests in Syria. The disgraceful government of Putin's dictatorship not only continued to give political support and of course sell him crappy Russian arms as he fired on peaceful protests against the Assad dictatorship, they continued after it was proven Assad was using weapons of mass destruction on civilian targets.

They also tried and failed to have relevance in Egypt.

If you look to history, the US vs Russia power struggle is the same as that before between the British and the French. We left you the scraps. Be happy with that.
