If people want to smoke let them smoke, just make them pay for it.

Personally I think the recent trend about packaging is a load of poop. Other than higher taxes especially on cigarettes rather than pipes and cigars, EU countries that provide socialized medicine should find ways to make smokers contribute more to the system, as well as an increase in top-up insurance. Let's face it, the cost of treating these inevitable cancers are a huge burden to the rest of us.

I haven't had a cigarette since the 3rd of August 2003 and I still have the same reoccurring dream, nay nightmare, about smoking "just one" and wake up wondering whether I've started again. It's always the same, I'm telling myself I can have just one...

Truly evil is the addiction to nicotine if it can play tricks on the mind nearly ten years later. Anybody else get this?

I am anti smoking but it is interesting to know that in the UK, the average smoker pays more than 3 times more tax on the product than they use in extra health care. They also live shorter lives meaning they use less money for state pensions.

I'm not anti-smoking to be fair. I really scoff the ex-smokers that come out with views like the first post on the thread.

"the average smoker pays more than 3 times more tax on the product than they use in extra health care"

I'd be interested to see how that figure was achieved, but I am always amazed to see how many people still buy cigarette's in the UK at their ridiculous price. Let's not forget the thriving blackmarket there too....

@Madverts i dunno, i heard it on LBC a year or two ago. They may have referred to 20 or 30 fags a day smokers, can't recall but they taxes they pay was huge, I did smoke for quite a long time but giving up was the best thing i did.

Agreed. People who have never been a heavy smoker cannot understand what an achievement quitting actually is. On a par with heroin addiction they reckon.
