Did no one tell Sen. McCain that the next election's not until 2012?

will they keep him as an exhibit?

Sen. McCain and Sarah Palin were the best the GOP could cough up to fight the last election.
I can understand why McCain wanted to go back to prison..... :-)

"Class act is all I can say."
Indeed. It's a real shame this attribute was non-existant during his disaterous presidential campaign - up until his defeat speech, where the real McCain came through once again. Goes to show what hate politics can do to a decent bloke.

It was quite existant in his campaign.....The media choose to ignore it or just flat out downplay it in their love affair for "The One". As far as hate politics, I never really saw the type of venom that was directed at Senator McCain when he was candidate from the 'left' in my entire life.....How many times did posters here remind us that he dumped his ex-wife? Called him McShame, claimed he was a senile old dolt? or in a nod to Sushi...He crashed how many planes as a pilot? I think you might want to consider where the real 'hate politics' was in the past campaign and who were the main players fanning it.

Sailwind, I hear you, but let's not forget - Sen. McCain came out with some outright lies about Obama, even going as low as to call the current president a "celebrity," comparing him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, and then in a slap in the face to all Americans, picking the dumbest veep candidate in the directory, Sarah Palin, a selection that ultimately buried McCain's chances of every winning the election.
In the processs, Sen. McCain claimed that Ms. Palin's background and credentials had been extensively checked, a claim that later turned out to be patently false.
Sailwind - "How many times did posters here remind us that he dumped his ex-wife?"
He did, very unceremonously, I might add.
Sailwind - "[or] claimed he was a senile old dolt?"
He had to ask an advisor how many houses he himself owned!
Sailwind - "or in a nod to Sushi...He crashed how many planes as a pilot?"
Madverts' comment "- up until his defeat speech, where the real McCain came through once again" - indicates that Sen. McCain was clearly not himself while campaigning and spinning an ever growing web of lies, and the only time he switched back to the real John McCain was after his lies and untruths had buried him.
Sailwind, I know you are a veteran and that you respect other veterans, but there are times when you have to call a spade a spade, and that election was one of those times.

McCain is a decent, upstanding fella - the advisors who ran his campaign were not.
Can we agree on that?

Sen. McCain had a choice placed before him and **he chose to play dirty **in the last election.
He didn't have to.
Believe it or not, sometimes you have to face the consequences of your actions.

Come to think about it, this is a truism that many Americans unfortunately forgot during the disastrous bush years, 2000-2008, and another reason why America is a better place without the previous administration running it.

I think Sailwind was talking more about your daily obsession with smearing the man to the greatest possible extent that you could.

Says the guy who precedes this statement with "The One", quoting one of McCain's adds in which he draws the comparison of Obama (and his support) to Moses (or God), and which people on the Right still constantly use today. You're in no place to comment on others' smearing while you have done so plenty yourself.

You always know when people are on the right track when SuperLib can't but come on here and try to simply insult someone instead of bothering to comment on the thread.
Sushi made a well thought out and excellent post; McCain during campaign and the REAL McCain are two entirely different people. I respected the man before he ran this time, and hell I even felt sorry for him when bush used the same Republican smear tactics to sink his run for President way back when. As soon as he lost, I saw McCain turn instantly back into the somewhat respectable man he is, save that the damage was done -- he showed how fickle, tempermental, and how clearly eager he was to make up lies in order to get some power.
I'm glad he went back to visit the 'Hanoi Hilton', and it was good of him to write what he did in the book, and I'd like to know more about what he said during the tour and what he did in Vietnam besides.
I don't think he will, but McCain should NEVER run for president again -- it literally turned him into a monster, and THAT is what drew the negative attacks to him.

sailwind - his usual character was not apparent during his hate campaign. I do re-respect the man, but couldn't believe the way he allowed other people to run his presidential campaign. And that, my friend, coupled with his campaign organizers diasaterous choice for a running mate, is exactly why he's touring the Hanoi Hilton instead of being aboard Air Force One.
Heh, and the gas tax "plan" really made me chortle.

Nice to have you with us again, Mr. McCain. Your usual room?

I'm afraid Sushi and Madverts, like many others, are confusing Sarah Palin and Tina Fey.

Nope. Tina Fey is the smart one.
Face it, bud. McCain made a DEVASTATING mistake in taking her on, and the proof was in the pudding.

"It ( the Hanoi Hilton ) was originally used by French colonialists"
I blame the French for starting all this misery.

Politics aside, John McCain is an American hero. I just hope that he takes it easy while visiting Hanoi. I know he used to be a long-term "guest" of the (North) Vietnamese government, but I just hope the weather doesn't get to him.

Yes, damn them dear boy. The 3,000,000 dead once the US got involved after the French pre-empted the massacre are nothing when hiding a dark patch in your own history....

Seems like a pretty tough guy for going back there.

I see McCain's name is now capitalized by the Int'l Left here.
I guess that means he has been successfully 'reeducated' in their eyes :)

John McCain has a remarkable strength of character and is still a true patriot. Now that the campaign BS is done you also notice that McCain does reach across the aisle quite a bit more than his collegues.

This visit to the Hanoi Hilton by John McCain as described in the article is obviously a deeply personal event for him, and a very dignified one for as US war veteran. It also reflects both the fast healing between our two nations as well as our mutual security interests.

Sen. McCain is an honorable and strong American.

Will he apologize for the bombing of Cambodia and Laos and the use of chemical weapons and the abandonment of allies?
0
Molenir
Why should he? He didn't do any of that, nor is he the President. Perhaps you should ask Obama for it. Considering his complete and total incompetence in foreign policy, he might very well give it to you.

I'm a McCain supporter so I'm biased, but you've got to be pretty cold to be criticizing his military experience.
