Any King that goes out in battle with his men and dies out on the battlefield gets my respect. He could've just sat it out on the throne and let his men do the fighting, I respect him for that.

"He could've just sat it out on the throne and let his men do the fighting, ..." Actually, at the time, I doubt that he could have. The men wouldn't likely have supported him in battle, if he hadn't shown up.

This whole story just makes me want to watch BlackAdder...

So people have been parking over his body for ages -- quite a humble end. At least they found him, and regardless of what he did or didn't do it is indeed interesting.

me thinkth that Richard good name was besmirched by Tudor of the ilick of Henry VIII, a man of model stature. Poor Henry only broke from the Church, so he could but wed again and again, and again after offing her head ofcourse.

I wonder if there will be a state funeral - he was a king after all.

"Alas poor Richard. I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one now, to mock your own grinning? quite chap-fallen? Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must come; make her laugh at that."

They found the remains of the monastery first and then dug further to see if they could find Richard's body. The body was discovered last year and in the time since they've been doing the DNA sequencing to try and ID him. Wiki says that "arrowhead" was actually a Roman-era nail that probably got wedged into his spine as he was dropped into the grave. The back of his skull was cleaved off, consistent with being struck by a heavy bladed weapon. They say that would would have resulted in a quick death. As the King's circlet was discovered at the body by the victors, it's doubtful Richard was wearing a helm at the time.

Even though he had numerical superiority, King Richard was doomed. One third of his forces stood to the side and never entered the battle when ordered to. Richard then made a tactical error and decided to take his trusted retainers and chase after Henry when he saw him peel off and head towards some erstwhile "neutral" forces that had been holding off declaring for either side. When the "uncommitted" forces saw Richard and a small group of his retainers attack Henry's party, they decided to back Henry and enveloped Richard's small group. After that, it was just a matter of killing Richard so the fighting would stop. It was a silly blunder. When YOU are the target for their army, you don't make it easy for yourself to be captured/killed. He was so locked into the idea of catching and killing Henry so the battle would end, that he forgot the reverse situation had the same result.

Wait, what? I thought Richard III was killed by Edmund Blackadder by accident, when the king was having a loo break.

Seven years after King Richard III died, Christopher Columbus paid a visit to the Caribbean. Richard JUST missed out on another major moment in history!
