FARC rebel attack kills eight Colombian police

BOGOTA —

Eight Colombian police were killed and another wounded Friday in a suspected attack by Marxist FARC rebels in eastern Colombia, officials said.

The ambush took place early Friday in the town of Fortul, not far from the Venezuelan border, a police spokesman for the Arauca region said.

Gun-toting attackers “activated the device and finished the police off with rifle shots. They killed the commander of the station, the deputy commander, the secretary, two corporals and three patrolmen,” said the spokesman on condition of anonymity.

Another police officer was wounded and transferred to a local hospital.

“It was a cowardly attack because they had a bomb ... This is not a form of combat, it is a cowardly terrorist attack,” Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santo told reporters.

Santo did not rule out that the attack may have been perpetrated by the National Liberation Army (ELN), a lesser-known rebel group.

The incident occurred two days after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) attacked another police patrol in the southwestern region of Narino, injuring two policemen.

Santo told AFP the FARC “is surviving in very precarious conditions and the government is still ready to negotiate for peace ... but the guerrillas are not showing any signs they are willing to negotiate.”

The FARC still have about 7,000 members, Santo added. Non-governmental organizations put the number at some 10,000 men.

Geez... I wonder if TooLongGone can come on here and explain to us how there are possibly non-Muslim terrorists. Or perhaps these guys have just been wishing they were Muslims for.... how many years now?

Better eliminate all Columbians, eh, TooLongGone?

    Educating smithinJapan gets so tiresome.

FARC is the military wing of the Columbian Communist Party.

No, it is not Muslim; but the radical Left worldwide has had considerable influence on the "global jihad," as one of Obama's appointees has called transnational Islamo-fascism.

Maybe you'd like to read up a bit -

'MANY ELEMENTS in the ideology of al Qaeda--set forth most clearly in Osama bin Laden's 1996 "Declaration of War Against America"--derive from this same mix. Indeed, in Arab intellectual circles today, bin Laden is already being likened to an earlier icon of Third World revolution who renounced a life of privilege to head for the mountains and fight the American oppressor, Che Guevara. According to Cairo journalist Issandr Elamsani, Arab leftist intellectuals still see the world very much in 1960s terms. "They are all ex-Sorbonne, old Marxists," he says, "who look at everything through a postcolonial prism." '

TooFarGone: "No, it is not Muslim; but the radical Left worldwide has had considerable influence on the "global jihad," as one of Obama's appointees has called transnational Islamo-fascism."

I should actually italicize the 'No, it's not Muslim; BUT...' part, as you desperately seek out a way to backtrack on former statements that all terrorists are Muslims (and vice-versa) and for which I educated you on the other day, giving you the name of FARC, the IRA, and a dozen others after your challenge to do so. Hahaha. I know full well about FARC, thank you, which is why I educated you on it on the Nigeria thread earlier in the week. My point here was to poke fun at your clear twisting of the truth and desperate attempts to really and honestly try and see EVERYTHING wrong in the world as being related somehow to Islam.

I especially love how in the quotation you use at the end you somehow take one person's opinion about very links between bad behaviours to somehow mean the FARC are only a step away from AQ, and Islam. Hilarious! By that logic I can do the exact same thing for you and the others who want Muslims dead -- errr... if not dead, simply 'out of the picture' -- AQ wants the same for Western influence, therefore you have links to AQ. You're on a Jihad of your own against Jihadis.

There... do you see how tenuous a link you are trying to make? You asked me for terrorist groups operating around the world that are not Muslim. I gave you one (of many); FARC. You cannot keep blaming Muslims world-wide for whatever personal issues you have, the same as we cannot blame the people of other groups or countries/cultures based on the actions of a few.

The FARC have been going at it and kidnapping, murdering, etc. LONG before the attacks on 9/11 and before your bizarre world view was formed by the media.

Um, smith, when it comes to global jihad, nearly all terrorists are Muslims. This case was localized terrorism in which case the same link can't be made. You're basically comparing apples to oranges.
