The brutal group emerged in the early 1990s as an extremist offshoot of a decades-long Muslim separatist rebellion in the south.

Let's not forget that before that, Abu Sayyaf's founders were trained by the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, the US-backed groups that fought and resisted against the left-wing Afghan government and the Soviets.

PM Abe should send Japanese Special Forces to help ally Philippines defeat Abu Sayyaf.

Sending trainer planes doesn't help and seems just a show of support.

A true ally must fight alongside Philippine forces in Basilan and defeat AS.

I'm sure the well-trained Japanese forces will annihilate AS in 4 months.

Let's not forget that before that, Abu Sayyaf's founders were trained by the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, the US-backed groups that fought and resisted against the left-wing Afghan government and the Soviets.

And before that they were trained in Islamic theology in Saudi Arabia, as were many Islamists around the world.
