I think these "foes" of stem cell research are the same religious nuts who are also against teaching kids about sex, about human evolution etc...anything that goes against the bible to these guys it just evil, which is very sad, sad indeed. Millions of people around the world can live better and more healthy lives if we continue stem cell research.

The problem wiv America is the fact that they have too many extremists.
Blimey Mike palin's wife even believed God made the world in 7 days and all that.
I mean this research is done by proffesionals, granted they're over paid and mostly bone idle, but progress must be made.
My late wife may have been helped by this research, very sad it was when she lost her marbles and the use of her legs.
God gave us brains to make peoples life better, so it is best to do what we can to help sick and disabled innit?

I'm far from being one of the 'religious nuts' elbudamexicano fears (I'm an atheist), but I can't help having problems with this idea that 'the embryos are going to be destroyed anyway so we might as well use them'. I'm not sure when 'human life' actually begins, but the creation of extra embryos in fertility treatment and the discarding of 'left-overs' is worrisome.
If we allow what might have been potential babies to be 'used' because 'they're going to be destroyed anyway' I don't see that it's that big a step to 'using' eg people on Death Row 'because they're going to be destroyed anyway', or the terminally ill 'because they're going to die anyway' or those in a vegetative state 'because they're no use anyway'.
I'm not saying that I'm either for or against stem cell research as such, simply that it's not as cut and dried as some like to make it seem. The ethical issues need more airing before we rush off to work miracles. In the meantime, the money and research time could be more profitably used in preventing unnecessary deaths and illness caused by preventable factors such as insect-borne disease, lack of clean drinking water, malnutrition, etc.

It will be nice to see the US get into the game. I'm wondering how many living people have been hurt by the lack of research, all to save embryos that are going to be destroyed anyway.

Good for the US! Finally time they started getting with modern day science. This will blow the minds of a lot of people against Obama but for stem cell research, but hey.

Three fifteen sharp.
I.e., this is one of those questions that has no answer.

For me the more important question is when does an embryo turn into a person. But that is just my opinion.

Now, if it was mammalian embryos other than human ones that were being "harvested" you can bet that Obama's core constituency would revolt, bigtime.
