RIP to the man who helped open our eyes to just how devious our leaders could be.

Bradlee overcame polio as a teenager and served on destroyers in the Pacific during World War II. He got his first reporting job at The Post because it was raining too hard for him to bother getting off the train at Baltimore and applying at The Sun, as he intended. The U.S. owes Mr. Bradlee a great debt of gratitude, as recognized by him being awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom. He kept the "dark money" crowd represented by Nixon and his cronies from taking our country down a very dangerous path. He proved the value of a truly free "Fourth Estate" and its vital role in maintaining democracy.

The U.S. and especially other countries that have no verifiable "Fourth Estate" they need their own Ben Bradlee. Even though he lived and hanged out with high government officials (even Presidents), he kept a wary eye on them - atypically, the more he got into the inner circles of upper echelons, the more cynical of them he became.
