You don't have to treat people differently just because they are Muslim. All you have to do is pay attention to people's behaviour. Hasan wasn't hiding his raidical Islamist views. If his superiors and colleagues were less worried about getting promoted and afraid to be given a bad performance review by identifying a minority soldier as a problem, this terrorist probably could have been stopped.

No, we don't have to be paranoid, but we should be cautious, should we not? It does seem AQ is not running out of recruits, even white ones.

Despite you dropping the ball in the latter half of the post, you start it off with an unexpected stroke of genius -- albeit it seems unintentional.

What I suggest is that the Pentagon start reviewing how they RECRUIT people; not hiring ex-cons and gang-bangers and then later trying to see if there are any problems. Along with this case there's the man who shot a bunch of comrades in the medical building on the base in Iraq; cases of men going on suicidal rampages, and more, and more. They should review everyone first before recruiting, and then keep tabs on ANY person posing a problem, regarless of religion, orientation, or what have you.

I'd say this comes too little too late.

Perhaps members of the armed forces should be asked to swear an oath of allegiance to the country each year, with their hand resting upon the object they most believe in. Anyone uncomfortable with that can find another job.

Or is that it, ...the bloke was worried he might not find a civilian job in today's job market?

Nor should the US military accept just anyone like you suggest AQ does, and hence my 'everyone' should be checked, even the 'right wingers'.

Now, you are trying to say they should really look into low class whites and Hispanics, but lay off the Muslims. No, we are at a war with them that they started. If this were WWII, you wouldn't be fighting next to some Heinz Krout, and you would be happy. How many Germans born in America did the same thing that Hasan did? I bet many. The US watched out for them and they should do the same here - they should be afraid to double check on people of the Islamic faith because its gets you angry and nor they shouldn't be the ones that have to go the long stretch and try to understand them - its more the other way around. They don't even need a review. The guy was a traitor cut and dry!

Something VERY fishy going on here people! A local news site, http://arklatexhomepage.com/content/fulltext/?cid=4509 is reporting that...Tuesday, Jun 19, 2007 @04:57pm CDT "An exercise designed to test Fort Hood's ability to respond to a terrorist attack will be conducted Wednesday. Military officials say the drill will involve a simulated explosion at the post's Abrams Fitness Center, resulting in mass casualties and triggering protective measures and emergency response. Col. Tori Bruzese, Fort Hood's Garrison Commander said, "We have a duty to ensure that we are ready to thwart any attempt to harm America's most precious resource, our Soldiers and Familes." The drill is expected start at 1 p.m. and be completed by 5 p.m."

A "Simulated Terrorist Attack" was ongoing during 9/11, and during London's 7/7. If an "Eye-ranian" suddenly ends up being arrested anywhere in Texas during this drill for a car backfiring or a soda can popping, then we know who to invade next! OK John McCain, start singing!

We do. Not each year, but enlisted members re-swear their Oath of Enlistment every time they re-enlist (extend their enlistment) and officers re-swear their Oath of Office every time they are promoted to a new grade. Could be done more often though for symbolic purposes I suppose...

Oh yes, you do. Or you would, in a sane world. Because when the jihadists call, they address the muslims... and not buddhists, zoroastrians, or norwegian milk farmers.

So, in a sane world, you´d pay extra attention to believers in islam, the same way you´d pay extra attention to believers in communism or nazism.

But we won´t, because it is so incorrect. It is our friggin political correctness that is doing us in.

I recommend yearly lie detector tests for Muslims in the military. This would be a cheap and effective way of weeding out potential radical extremists who may try to endager our military and freedoms.

Not sure how forcing a guy who wanted a discharge to stay in the army qualifies as "political correctness". Looks more like they thought he was putting on a show to try and get out, and they couldn't set that kind of precedent where guys can get out of the military by claiming sympathy with the enemy. But the fact is that when he joined the army the Soviets were the evil empire, Islamic extremists were called "freedom fighters", and Al Queda was a CIA backed organization. That such a guy might really go nuts because of the changed situation and be a real threat, that probably just never occurred to anybody.
