As to France returning to NATO I think it's a good thing. I always thought de Gaulle was a pompous git who made a name for himself vecoming a "general" whilst hiding in England as the French living under and some resisting the Nazi occupation suffered.

Well, from what I've read, the NATO split was mostly a symbolic thing for France to exert their independence from the West and counter what they saw as American imperialism in Europe through the UK.
Looks like they're getting over it.
