    She's well out of it. Who would want to remain married to a bloke who valued a hymen more than he valued the person it was attached to?

    Exactly. And what about the men? Are they supposed to be virgins too when entering a marriage, or is it OK according to Islamic Law to play around?

    cleo,

    if a guy told you he was a virgin, and you may have been one too, and you married him, but later he told you about his great pre marital sex life, how would you feel? confused? angry? betrayed? I think that you would tear him to pieces for his lies. the virgin factor is nothing, the lie factor is everything. its a massive betrayal and humiliation for a religious person however I do doubt the guy was a virgin and think it unfair that he expected her to be one too but I do understand his anger. she lied big time in full knowledge of the cultural and religious importance of the issue. anyway, my opinion is that a hymen is the last thing I want to come across again. rather a woman of experience.

    Oh what a great ruling this was. Apparently French courts are now enforcing Islamic law. Time for Europe to adopt a strict no tolerance policy in reagards to foreign religeons creeping into government decisions. As for the virgin thing I'd bet worldwide 90% of marriages could be annuled for that reason.

    "Catholicism, alien to France?"

    Yes, super-d... - when you got the head-scarf "ban" so badly Wrong. If you feel so in-secure in regards to the French with your constant need to whine about them, at least critisize them on legitimate issues.

    Imagining the muslims are taking over France because you read it on your favourite hate blog, doesn't mean that is actually what is going on here.

    Other than that, this ruling is stupid.

    In fact super-d;

    When you claim that this "Couldn't have happened without broad political support", did you actually read the bits in the article that said;

    "Justice Minister Rachida Dati, whose parents also were born in North Africa, initially shrugged off the ruling—but the public clamor reached such a pitch that she asked the prosecutor’s office this week to lodge an appeal."

    Perhaps you think the "broad political support" came from the UMP that have called on the Justice Minister to overturn the ruling saying the decision was totally unacceptable and was incompatible with France's secular principles?

    "France passed a law in 2004 banning Muslim head scarves and other ostentatious religious signs from classrooms, a move that caused an uproar in the Muslim world."

    Well JT, after 4 years of getting it wrong, the article is almost correct. The ban is not just for classrooms. It's is everything in the public sector.

    madverts - a ruling like this says pretty clearly that unelected bureaucrats and lawyers (at least, that is who I want to imagine is responsible here...) loathe their France more than I could ever be capable of doing.

    Fundies win, you lose. Sorry you had to learn it from a Yank.

    madverts,

    could you at least entertain the question and debate rather than just insulting someone because you lack the knowledge and imagination to win an argument against them? It ruins the post for the rest of us.

    romulus,

    Which question haven't I entertained an I'll make a better effort for you?

    that one. I was enjoying the banter.

    Another step forward in the islamic conquest of Europe. The excuses that "islam' was not mentioned in the court ruling are ridiculous. Such a case would have not even gotten near a court room if logded by a Catholic, Jew, or Hindu.

    As someone said earlier in the thread: Enjoy the twilight.

    They most certainly are not. This was just one errant judge whose ruling is going to be overturned in no time at all. Vive la France, vive la (non islamic) republique.

    Prime Minister Francois Fillon said an appeal must be lodged “so this ruling does not set a judicial precedent.” The appeal was filed Tuesday and three judges could hear the case sometime this month, said Eric Vaillant of the appeals court in Douai, near Lille.

    I am curious about the outcome of this appeal. On what grounds is the court going to annul the marriage? Pronouncing the proceedings of the lower court a mistrial won't do it, will it?
