Sarge, I can't help but point out that without US support, albeit funneled through the ISI, and then, after the withdrawal of Soviet troops, US neglect in paying needed attention to the Afghan situation, then the Taliban probably wouldn't have come to power at all.
This find, however, is great archeological news and could shed more light on one of the most interesting eras of Central Asian history.
US neglect in paying needed attention to the Afghan situation
Too bad this was a job half done. Not the first time either. The US has trouble focusing long term. But this is not what the topic is about. It is a miracle this hemp sack survived the Taliban destruction.
sarge: "keech2, I can't help but point out that without that U.S. support, the Russians would still be prancing all over Afghanistan."
sarge, I can't help but point out that that is merely speculation, and cannot be proven. What can be proven is that by training the Afghans to fight back against said Russians, and use guerilla tactics, OBL was created, and befriended. After that, the Taliban was also born and brought into government, as keech pointed out.
Anyway, this is about the statues, and it's a wonderful find. Kudos to those who did so, and even though the destruction of the Buddhas is tragic, little things like this help cushion the blow ever so slightly.

"the two giant statutes in Bamiyan, central Afghanistan, that were destroyed by the country's former Taliban rulers."
I can't help but point out that if it weren't for the United States of America, the Taliban would still be the rulers of Afghanistan.

I guess while Germany refuses to send enough troops to get the job done they still have a few extra peeps to go gold digging.

Hand the bag to the local imam; he will dispose of it properly.
Remember, Afghanistan once was Buddhist area. What happened?
