A self-deportation plan?
And they've both supported it?
Only conservatives could hatch something so embedded in fantasy.

"Obama-level fantasy"
ouch.

This shows how shrewd the Newt is. He attacks his Republican opponent using Obama as his club. Question is, will the voters take the bait?

it's funny to see no one disputes that there's such a thing as obama-level fantasy. the term will enter the lexicon of u.s. politics.

Newt needs to look at what happened in AZ when they passed (or tried to pass) their illegal immigration laws that allowed the police to question if they were in the country illegally. About 100,000 illegal immigrants left Arizona after the state passed a law in 2007 that enhanced penalties on businesses that hired them, according to the Department of Homeland Security. (From a USA Today article), and some were doing the same with the recent law that was enacted in 2010. Same thing happened in Alabama when they enacted tougher laws.
Why would someone stay if they no longer were able to receive benefits and services. No matter how old they are, they would find somway to leave.
I wonder will Newt say something different when he gets to AZ.

Illegals must be deported or otherwise encouraged to leave the country or the rule of law is meaningless. There are hundreds of thousands if not millions of people waiting in their home countries for the opportunity to immigrate to the US legally. Those that came to the US illegally - no matter how long they have lived here - cannot be allowed to jump in the front of the line and be allowed to legally remain in the country. They must return home and wait their turn. If that is a hardship for them and their families they have no one to blame but themselves.

@Rush "no one disputes that there's such a thing"
The difference is that some of Obama's ideas get turned into legislation. It's a little perk of being U.S. President.
Mitt and Newt have been out of office for ages. If they don't attract enough voters (including Hispanics) by November, then everything they campaigned on is the actual, demonstrable fantasy.

And only loons could believe something that has been proven to work, is a fantasy. I find it interesting, that some of the same people who condemn conservatives for wanting the illegals out of the US, have no problem saying the exact same thing when it comes to people here in Japan illegally. You know who you are.
I'm from Arizona, it works. If the Federal Government got tough on illegals. If they made it more economically viable for them to go back to their home country, then to stay in the US, then yes, this plan would work. No, not all of them would leave. But many of them would. If additionally, benefits were given to those who chose to come to the US through established channels, and further punishments tacked on to those here illegally, there would be even more incentive to leave, and come back legitimately.
Overall though, as far as I'm concerned, this is just another strike against Gingrich. It makes me like him even less. After his comments attacking capitalism, I wasn't seriously considering him as a candidate, but with this, he is sounding less like a conservative, and more like Bush 3. Romney is already too far left as it is, but given a choice between the 2 of them, Romney is sounding better and better.

obama has kenyan relatives who have been in America illegally for years. does romney think they will self-deport?

Gingrich is a creep

Despite Gingrinch's protests to the contrary, Romney seems to be making a lot more sense.
3
TorafusuTorasan
@Rush "does romney think"
Your guess is as good as ours. Some members of Mitt's family tree are settled in Mexico, where they exiled themselves to escape American legal consequences over polygamy. Not quite the same as self-deportation, but close.

Leaving politics aside, Romney has a fascinating family history that sounds like a good Larry McMurtry novel.
I didn't know until now that Mitt's dad George (eventual Michigan governor) was born in a polygamous commune in Chihuahua, Mexico just before the Mexican Revolution--the M.R. being the reason some Romneys came back to the U.S. George was close to becoming the Republican candidate for President in 1968 until he started criticizing the Vietnam War. In my view, Mitt's massive wealth makes him a less compelling character than many of his forebears, though he's not entirely at fault having inherited so much from his dad.

It's amusing that Gingerich calls it an 'Obama-level fantasy' but it's something that he himself has supported.

Gingrich’s "angry white man" will play well with some, but over time his base will shrink. It's inevitable.

Molenir: " I find it interesting, that some of the same people who condemn conservatives for wanting the illegals out of the US, have no problem saying the exact same thing when it comes to people here in Japan illegally."
Yes, I condemn conservatives for wanting illegals out of the US, and I have no problem condemning conservatives who want illegals out of Japan -- the exact same thing. What's your point?
"And only loons could believe something that has been proven to work, is a fantasy."
So, people who buy into what Gingerich himself calls 'fantasy' (but supports) are loons? You guys do an awesome job of shooting yourselves in the foot and then stuffing them in your mouths.
3
TorafusuTorasan
To be fair to George Romney, his parents were probably monogamous by the time he was born (compare with modern Newt-style "open relationships"), and his family lost almost all their property in Chihuahua fleeing the Mexican Revolution. He really did have to start from scratch as an (physical if not legal) immigrant in America.
A key George Romney quote: "We were the first displaced people of the twentieth century."

"President Gingrich"

I'm fully in favor of Romney deporting himself.

Where to? No one else would take him (I suppose he could buy them off, though).

Yes, I'm sure the term will be picked up and rehashed by right wing media pundits ad infinitum. It will join other ready-made pejorative cliches like 'drive-by media', 'elites', 'socialist', 'feminazi', 'death panels', 'man-child', and Obama 'hating America'. Are you people proud of yourselves for this type of discourse?

Romney's suggestion seems the most humanitarian to me, ironically. The onus for following employment laws is overwhelmingly on employers - for example, for determining proper age or qualifications. The same should be true for determining the legal right to work.
"Grandma Sanchez" most likely doesn't work anyway, so she'll be able to enjoy her sunset years without worry of deportation; those currently in the workforce might think about heading home; and those not yet in the States would be discouraged from coming. It's not a perfect solution, but it beats forced deportation.
Gingrich's idea is quite a bit crazier: he would have "citizen committees" composed of (who? white?) Americans vouch for the character of those undocumented who would like permission to stay. Imagine the witch hunts and outright bribery that this would engender! It would open up a Pandora's box of passions, that is for sure.

With all this talk of fantasy, probably it's best not to mention some interesting news about Mitt's Mormon church - which has reportedly been involved in **proxy baptism for the dead. **
"According to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church, these posthumous "blessings" are intended to "save" ancestors and others who weren't baptized in life or were baptized "without proper authority."
Apparently, any Mormon can baptize any person posthumously.
"Church members have performed the ritual on Buddha, Catholic popes, 9/11 hijackers, William Shakespeare, Joan of Arc, Elvis Presley, President Obama's mother and even reportedly Jesus Christ. In 2002, the managing director of the Mormon's family and church history department told The New Yorker magazine that as many as 200 million dead people had been baptized as Mormons."
So, after people have died and supposedly gone on to the afterlife, a Mormon can somehow baptise them and get them out of hell, if that is where their soul is being tormented.
But before evangelicals get all excited and start high-fiving due to this potentially game-changing revelation, perhaps they could explain the Bible's book of Matthew 27 v 51-53 where it says, "At that moment [when Christ died] the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city and appeared to many people."
The Earth shook?
Dead saints came back to life, came out of their graves and strolled through Jerusalem?
Can any Christians out there please give us the lowdown on this?

" The Earth shook? Dead saints came back to life, came out of their graves and strolled through Jerusalem? "
it is as queer as thinking the non existent rise of the oceans could be halted simply because words to that effect appeared on obama's teleprompter during his campaign. but liberals clapped and shrieked and wet themselves all the same.

SushiSake3:
So when they baptize someone, they change their religions without asking?
Sounds similar to FB enrollments faking members.

Obama must be laughing his ass off.
"You know what else is a fantasy? "President Gingrich"
You know what is a joke? President Obama.

Yes. You go from Jewish Holocaust victim to Mormon departed. Without the approval of you or your family. It's Brigham Young meets Arthur Anderson.

He says on a thread that deals with the fact that those running for the GOP ticket are nothing BUT jokes, and bad ones at that.

romney's church might be weird but you don't see his pastor shrieking to the congreagation for america's destruction like you do in obama's.

I'd like to call it the Post-Death Reverse Baptism business.
They reverse baptized Buddha.
So Buddha is now a Mormon?
Nearly fell off my chair when I read that. :-)

He actually earned just about everything he's made. It wasn't given to him. Yes he came from a wealthy and politically connected family, but he also worked hard to get where he is. He didn't just become CEO of Bain Capital one day. He had to work his way up.
Smith, my comment wasn't directed specifically at you, but rather at some others of your type. You probably know who I'm talking about. They agree with you politically. They think its horrible that conservatives want to deport illegals in the US, however when it comes to threads on illegal immigration in Japan, its amazing how many of these same people strongly speak out against it. Saying they should be deported etc.
Actually, my understanding, is that it is being done for those who have passed on. They though can choose whether to accept it or not. So, no one is changing religions without their consent. Besides since they're dead, does it really matter to anyone except their families?
1
SushiSake3
Molenir - "Besides since they're dead, does it really matter to anyone except their families?"
I think that between religious folk, it really does matter whether one person's imaginary god is more real than the other person's imaginary god.

RushO'Hannity
" I'd like to call it the Post-Death Reverse Baptism business "
you can call it whatever you want. they're mormons. they won't cut your head off or blow up your car if you make light of their beliefs. at worst they would probably send you a streudel.

hadn't thought of that. but the hypocrites of the left obviosuly have. will they ever be able to admit it to themselves? so much for all the hype and hoopla about diversity with these people.

Rush - "hadn't thought of that. but the hypocrites of the left obviosuly have."
Care to let us know who these folks are? Or are they just imaginary folk in your head??

I'm sure glad Mitt isn't a Muslim, or you would really go at him on his religious background.

Heh, ok that made me laugh.
Lets be honest here. Theres more then enough hypocrisy to go around, on both the left and right.
Find a thread on immigration here in Japan. Surely you can remember some of them. Maybe the Iranian girl who along with her family wanted to stay in Japan. If I remember the story, the family was deported back to Iran, but they decided to let the girl stay and finish High School. Not sure how far back these threads are archived, but I remember some really vicious posts in that and other threads, and by some of the usual suspects here on this board.

SushiSake3: (re: RushO'Hannity) "hadn't thought of that. but the hypocrites of the left obviosuly have."
Actually, Sushi, Rush is clearly calling Molenir a left-leaning hypocrite here, since it was him that thought of it and brought it up. Molenir himself seems to think I know who such people are, but I don't know anyone on here who cries foul about the US deporting illegal immigrants who hypocritically complain about immigrants coming into Japan. I'm sure there are some, but again can't think of any off the top of my head. Where he and Rush kind of screw themselves over with such comments is that most people who decry the act of deporting immigrants in the US are just the type of people who would do exactly the same thing about Japan deporting illegals (or pushing hard to keep them out). There's no hypocrisy in that at all.
More to the thread, though, there obviously IS a lot of hypocrisy going on between the GOP candidates and their hate-filled speeches and tirades.

Well then smith, you and sushi will jjust have to vote for Obama - if you think you can. .

unreconstructed: "Well then smith, you and sushi will jjust have to vote for Obama - if you think you can. ."
Never thought I could nor have either of us said we could. Fortunately, though, the majority of Americans WILL vote for Obama while these GOP morons continue to tear the party to shreds and throw around the blame for their own actions. We can still school you plenty on your own nations politics and history, though; no problems there.
But if you don't think Gingerich's calling Romney's "self-deportation" idea hypocritical when he himself believes in doing something along the same lines, feel free to explain how.

Well all I can say is you're all making a good case for lacism. Religion shouldn't have any place in politics, nor should people's personal lives, unless they're doing something illegal.

Right. Because smith screams it out in caps it will come to pass.

I agree. Also, if grandma never worked in the US, then she should have no problem moving back to where she is from, since obviously she came to the US at an age where she couldn't work. Self deportation is the best way.

Gingrich is a liar and was a critic of Ronald Regan. You should read some of his stuff from the 80's. Second his campaign has admitted to Gingrich saying a lie at the debates. There is nobody that will come forward to call his second wife a liar. He will pull his "pin" soon and be out of the election. The only question is if this will be in the primaries or general election. Clearly he is the most dangerous person to the American Republican party. He asked the question once "why people take an instant dislike to him", Senator Dole replied "it saves time".
