First Mexico and now Brazil. I hope ordinary citizens rise up to help authorities take down these gangs of terrorists.

Jose Oliveira e Silva: "It seemed as if I was in Iraq"

I'll bet Jose was never in Iraq.

“It seemed as if I was in Iraq,”

Didn't think you'd like the reference. Goodness knows what could have made this man make such a comparison!

Why not Mexico? Over 25,000 dead in the last couple of years due to the drug wars, a vastly greater number than Iraq. His statement a textbook case about how hyper media exposure makes people believe the violence is more than it really is...or less, in some cases.

According to http://www.iraqbodycount.org/database/ (which is understood to show much less death than in reality) show 24,599 corpses for 2007 alone.

That's probably why he didn't imagine himself in Tijuana.

I was talking about the most recent 2 years. Check the numbers. You won't like what you see.

Like what I see? That's not very honest Super, you said the last couple of years (and the Mexican drug war sure 'aint a bairn)

I could have used 2006's bodycount of 27,768 corpses.....

Even the 4645 corpses are a poke in the eye to your "vastly greater number than Iraq".

Like I said, no wonder the Jose Oliveira e Silva equated what he saw with the most dangerous and violent place on earth.

    4645 corpses of 2009.

Oh, and the added bonus of the Mexican bodycount is that 9 of 10 victims are allegedly members of organized-crime groups.

So you saw 4,645 for 2009 and ignored it and went back further in time? That doesn't seem very honest, especially since I mentioned "the last couple of years."

By the end of July, 2010, approximately 2,162 Iraqis have been killed. In Mexico the number is 7,048. I think a number over 3 times the size is vastly more. In addition, IBC reports all violent deaths, period. That's to say that any murder in the country is included. The number for Mexico is as specific as possible relating to the drug wars.

As the average person on the street (who has not seen the data) which is worse and I'm sure you'll know what the answer is. Why? Media exposure....pure and simple. Give the murders in Mexico proportional coverage and people wouldn't even be thinking about Iraq today.

"That doesn't seem very honest, especially since I mentioned "the last couple of years." "

It's fair to consider 2007 as a couple of years ago. The Mexican drug war has been going on for years with admitedly, a huge escalation in the past few. Whilst they may share a monopoly on abandoned bullet-riddled bodies, there's a difference between drug gangs settling scores, and indiscriminitely blowing up families at the market.

I imagine that to be the cause if the Iraqi comparison in this thread. And complaining about media coverage being the cause doesn't hold water, because that means taking into consideration the years where thousands were dying you seemingly wish to ignore.

    thousands were dying per month

Good points, but in reality the fact that the numbers have been reduced by some 80% isn't being reported with any kind of intensity, either. That probably has something to do with a man making statements about 2010 Iraq that are more appropriate for 2007 Iraq. You probably remember how I used to talk about JT's monthly reporting of civilian deaths when the numbers were increasing, then they suddenly stopped posting the monthly totals when the numbers were decreasing. If you've only been shown high numbers then that's all you have to work with.

The terrorist work on supplying carnage for the media, and they've done a "good" job.

    SuperLib , Madverts .

Come on the pair of you, this is just some witness prattling on to a TV news camera. He represents nobody but himself and we have no idea if he is total idiot. This is Rio De Janeiro, you know, the place where all the sports people will be getting their heads blown off in the next few years.

Now in the case of Mexico we know where all the boys are getting their toys, but where who these savages in Rio buying their toys from?
