Interesting article. I've been wondering since the start how the aid money was going to benefit Haiti besides a brand new larger than before Presidential Palace.

OssanAmerica -- what's your point? Or do you actually have one? But let me make one. The U.S., as the article states, has already contibuted $1.25 for every citizen. Currently Japan has spent $5.0 million, or $.04 per citizen. So, respectfully, no matter how exactly the U.S. money is being spent -- even if some were going for a new Presidential Palace -- no one here really has any basis for criticism.

Translation - Aid is for sweeping the poor into the countryside to make room for the armored retirement resorts for New York and London bankers.

this financial audit does seem sort of odd for the U.S. government. --> Maybe we need to audit right from the top (Federal Reserve) every year. Maybe that way we wouldn't have a T$ deficit (every year).
I know GW Bush wouldn't have done it and maybe Obama is just starting to get it. I see this as a positive.

US citizens should be nothing but pleased by this fact! I would consider it a stretch to say that a government as perennially corrupt as Haiti's deserves even a penny of every of aid dollar. In fact, it's undeservedly generous.

oh please...like there aren't 16000 better places in the world to retire...now, as punishment for those bankers who helped cause the global meltdown, i'd say haiti is a perfect choice

"I really believe Americans are the most generous people who ever lived, but they want accountability,”
I agree with both statements 100%

Nice work overall.

To reach a total of USD 70 million. Compared tp China's 7 million or SKOrea's 1 million. What's YOUR point other than to continuously bash Japan based on ridiculous arguments?

I thought the US had cents, not pennies.

Not giving the Haitian government money seems to be a good idea if the NGOs and US gov't can control where the money goes. If the people who need the food and medicine are getting the food and medicine. Maybe giving it one cent is giving it too much?
Madverts, cents and pennies are interchangeable in the US.

Kind of an odd choice for a headline tho, no?

My thought goes right along with several of the other posters. Only a penny! Outstanding. Should be less then that, but a penny per dollar is a good thing.
Of course that headline is written in such a way as to make you think that the charitable donations are being wasted. Thats a bad way to write headlines, as its misleading. Effective at grabbing attention, but misleading none the less.

I expect as the disaster efforts wane, the ratio of food and delivery costs will increase.
