They are being treated poorly because there is no air conditioning and no electricity?? Didn't anyone tell them or their lawyer that there was a major earthquake recently? I suppose that is no excuse. Really, Haiti should have gotten out the red carpet and fine china for them.
I am not saying these people deserve poor treatment, but complaining of no air conditioning and no electricity when so many people just lost their lives and those who didn't lost everything else, like family, homes, food, and on and on, is not right.
They meant well, but went in completely misguided and totally uninformed and from the impression I get from the news, they didn't seem to make any effort to find out how to do the right thing, the right way. Instead of helping, like they intended, they made a mess of things, got arrested, caused any new, legitimate adoptions to be stopped completely (for now) and now one of them needs medical help for a situation that could have been prevented if they had just taken the time to educate themselves on the conditions and proper precautions to take before going. While she could have avoided the situation, just the same I feel bad for Ms. Coulter and hopes she recovers soon. They really did mean well. Just unfortunately for them and for the resources they are now taking up, they are an example of why inexperienced folks can't just up and fly down there to help. They often end up as more of a hinderance.

I hope wherever the trial takes place that these people are found guilty of child trafficking and serve time. "Lord's work" or not, what they did was wrong.

I caught Geraldo yesterday while at work. And we can all agree he's a solid guy and a credit to the media. He stated that he believed that what they were doing was under good intentions and that there were Haitians who helped in rounded up the kids. That may not help, but as a person who has dealt with Haitians both in Miami growing up as well as actually going to Haiti while in the Army, I have to say this is nuts. They have gangs going around raping girls, killers walking the streets, and this bit has taken the lead as if even thing else aside of this is all going fine and dandy. For a country that allows forms of slavery, which includes children, the president should really find out what happened for sure because I got a feeling they are going to throw the book at them and that may affect how many others offer help. "go through the proper channels" In Haiti? Its no secret as to what you could buy directly from the Haitian government.

It will indeed affect how many others offer help...hopefully it will keep the inexperienced, untrained and unprepared away. It is indeed true, Haiti can be a dangerous place. However, some of the kids had parents still alive. You can't just steal children. As for saving them from the evils of Haiti (rape, prostitution, slavery, human trafficking, etc.), sending them to the Dominican didn't guarantee to keep them out of that danger. Dominican is notorious for child prostitution catering to tourists, as well as slavery and human trafficking. Haitians are also often treated as non-persons in DR.
Yes, there are proper channels to go through with adopting a Haitian child. Many people do so. Adopting a child from the Dominican who was actually stolen from Haiti is just plain wrong. If these kids were all actually orphans, I could condone what they did, but not even bothering to check if loved ones are searching for these children...it's just a step they should have taken before doing something so rash.
I am not slamming this group's intentions. I do feel badly for them. However, a lot of headache could have been avoided if they had just prepared for what they were trying to do. Preparation to ascertain that the children really were orphaned and had no relatives who could take them in. Once getting that ironed out, then preparation through authorities to get the kids out of the country or preparation to get around corrupt authorities to get the kids out of the country. Basically, it was like they were looking for a quick solution when it really required careful planning. That is the thing with going down there to help...you have to be willing to make a longterm commitment to stay there and really see things through from beginning to end.

This has many similarities with the French group Zoe's Ark that tried to fly 'orphaned' children out of Chad in 2007. 17 Europeans, including journalists. Very messy. Everyone changes their story when the fan gets hit. The President had to step in. http://en.afrik.com/article12342.html

Agreed.
Their story smells just as rotten. Surely they didn't really think they were simply going to arrive in the US with all the kids, saying their papers were lost in the earthquake?
