Hamas slams Gaza rocket attack as crossings stay closed

GAZA CITY —

Israel kept commercial goods crossings into the Gaza Strip closed on Friday after a Palestinian rocket attack the day before tested a week-old truce and was slammed by the territory’s Hamas rulers.

Two mortar rounds were also fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Friday, a military spokesman said, though he could not confirm where they hit. Army radio said they landed in open fields near the border without wounding anyone.

On Thursday Palestinian militants fired two rockets, one of which struck a field near the hard-hit southern Israeli town of Sderot without causing either casualties or damage.

That attack was claimed by the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a group loosely linked to the Fatah party of Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas whose forces were driven from Gaza when Hamas seized control there more than a year ago.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri criticised the attack, accusing “parties in Ramallah”—the West Bank town where Abbas’s government is based—of ordering the strike to help Israel maintain its blockade of the territory.

Abu Zuhri vowed that local authorities would “take all actions necessary to protect the national consensus” on the truce, and said the group behind the attack “bore full responsibility, along with Israel, for the siege.”

The Israeli military had earlier said goods crossings into Gaza would remain shut following Thursday’s rocket attack.

“The Karni and Sufa crossings remain closed, but the Nahal Oz fuel crossing is open,” Israeli military spokesman Peter Lerner said, adding that the opening of the goods crossings “would depend on the security situation.”

The Erez passenger crossing, used by diplomats, journalists, and Gazans requiring medical care in Israel or abroad, also stayed open.

Thursday’s rocket was the fourth to hit Israel since an Egyptian-brokered truce between the Jewish state and Palestinian militants took effect on June 19.

But sacked Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya told reporters after Friday prayers that the Islamist movement remained committed to the ceasefire.

“The factions and the people accepted the truce in order to realize their interests, first in halting the Israeli aggression and second in lifting the siege. So we want everyone to respect this agreement,” he said.

Palestinians and U.N. officials have meanwhile said Israeli soldiers fired shots across the border several times over the past week, wounding a farmer and another man.

But the military denied this, saying troops only fired warning shots in the air without causing casualties.

The agreement was supposed to halt all Palestinian attacks and Israeli military operations in and around the besieged Gaza Strip and eventually lead to the easing of the blockade on the densely populated territory.

Since Hamas seized power in June last year Israel has sealed Gaza off to all but limited humanitarian aid, spawning widespread fuel shortages and crippling the local economy in the impoverished territory of 1.5 million people.

The Islamic Jihad group on Tuesday fired three rockets at Israel in what it said was revenge for the death of one of its commanders in a firefight with Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank, which is not included in the truce.

Israel responded by shutting Gaza’s border crossings, but has not resumed the near-daily air strikes and ground incursions it carried out in the months leading up to the truce.

Hamas cannot control the militants, so they cannot delivery peace.

    Superlib.

Kinda agree, yet, the living conditions in the gaza strip for the average joe have improved.

Lets face it Israel got the palestinians by the short and curly. They control work permits for workers, food/water/supplies. Israel shuts the border-posts and 70+% of the people can't get to work, ambulances are delayed, no supplies for shops are coming in(you know like food), etc.

IMHO, the Palestinians are on the short end of the stick and naturally they try to fight back. But drop a rocket on Israel and Israel makes a military incursion leveling buildings, dropping bombs, killing civilians.

Call me weird but I feel for the Palestinians more than for the Israeli(who got nukes), etc.

Easy solution to the problem, not really but I think the US needs to pull their support for Israel(Funds, military goods, etc) and let them fight talk on an even level.

the US needs to pull their support for Israel(Funds, military goods, etc) and let them fight talk on an even level.

The aid Israel receives from the US represents maybe 3% of their GNP. So even if the US pulls its support, Israel will never be at the level of the "Palestinians". This is because Israelis, unlike Muslim Arabs, actually produce things and have an economy.

But drop a rocket on Israel and Israel makes a military incursion leveling buildings, dropping bombs, killing civilians.

Hmmm. Then how about not dropping rockets on Israel. But that will never happen since groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad, who seek the destruction of Israel, know that keeping the "Palestinian" population in misery only helps their cause. And first-world leftists are so easily duped.

Call me weird but I feel for the Palestinians more than for the Israeli(who got nukes), etc.

Just because you're weaker doesn't make you honorable.

So palestine should just lie back and accept being raped by israel because they are weaker and been kept so by Israel for a few decades.

Great arguments and shows your bias.

P.S.: A LOT of the Military hardware that Israel uses has been DONATED by the USA, won't show up any Aid sheets. Same way that the USA will support Israel on 90% of their decisions against palestine and arabs.

they are weaker and been kept so by Israel for a few decades.

Sorry, but the "Palestinians" have been kept weaker and in misery for decades by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Fatah, Tanzim, Al Aqsa Martyr's Brigade, The Popular Resistance Committees, The Palestine Liberation Front, PFLP, and all the other "Palestinian" terrorist groups. They'll never be able to achieve their goal of driving the Infidel into the sea with a content and productive population. Perhaps some day you'll see through the "Palestinian" lie.

A LOT of the Military hardware that Israel uses has been DONATED by the USA, won't show up any Aid sheets.

Would be interested in your sources on this. Please list.

So palestine should just lie back and accept being raped by israel

Haha. So who's showing their bias here?

    Suit yourself.

But explain why Israel DON'T follow UN resolutions, have nukes and no-one sez anything against those(including the USA who is against other nations having them).

If any other country did the same they would have been invaded and put on the terror list already.

But whatever I say will just bounce of you. So have a good one.

But explain why Israel DON'T follow UN resolutions

Since the UN has become nothing but a worthless joke, I see no reason to waste time explaining anything about the UN. It does, however, show that Arab league nations are capable of producing at least one thing - UN resolutions against Israel.

have nukes and no-one sez anything against those

Plenty of people say things against Israel having nukes. Especially those who know that these nukes are the only thing keeping the Muslim Arabs from eradicating Israel. But Israel has had nukes for over half a century now and despite at least three major defensive wars and countless intifadas, has never used them. I wouldn't worry too much about Israel's nukes.

But explain why Israel DON'T follow UN resolutions, have nukes and no-one sez anything against those

Because Israel's enemies also don't follow UN resolutions, like the one that created Israel and Palestine in the first place.

If any other country did the same they would have been invaded and put on the terror list already.

Since the Europeans gave Israel their nukes, I'm guessing you can see why the UN won't be doing any investigations anytime soon.

They control work permits for workers, food/water/supplies. Israel shuts the border-posts and 70+% of the people can't get to work, ambulances are delayed, no supplies for shops are coming in(you know like food), etc.

That's a direct result of terrorists using work permits, humanitarian aid lines, and anything they can get their hands on in order to kill innocents. Israel used to give free medical care to seriously hurt Palestinians in hospitals. Why did they stop it? Because the terrorists tried to smuggle in a lady with a bomb at the checkpoint. Her gaol was to kill Israeli doctors treating Palestinians. Now the checkpoint is closed the the service has stopped. That should tell you that the militants are more than happy to sacrifice the people they are supposedly fighting for.

IMHO, the Palestinians are on the short end of the stick and naturally they try to fight back.

And naturally they are in ruins while the other Arabs have made peace agreements with Israel and have moved on. Maybe there's something better than using ambulances to transport bombs to kill innocents? There's nothing "natural" about that. The result, which is to suspend ambulance crossings, is entirely natural.

The Palestinians are two groups....terrorists and citizens. I would like to see the situation improve for the citizens. But I think groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad are more than happy to make their people suffer in order to keep their policy of revenge.

This week Israel tried to arrest two terrorists in the West Bank, something they're allowed to do under the ceasefire. Islamic Jihad responded by launching rockets into Israel, something they're not allowed to do under the ceasefire. As a result of rockets being fired into Israel, Israel closed Gaza once again.

Now are you really going to sit there and tell me that Islamic Jihad is fighting for Palestinians? The militants are animals who will gladly let the people of Gaza suffer as long as they can get one more rocket into Israel.

Zen - If you're still around, I was finally able to open the link you listed. Please let me know where in the article it discusses weapons that have "been DONATED by the US".
