This is possibly the most important bill to pass through the U.S. Senate in years.
Here's hoping it is passed and that the GOP whingers (and a handful of Democrats) who go on about the economic cost and how many jobs may be lost due to this bill wake up, get real and realize that the era of oil is unsustainable and directly responsible for cancers, smog, polluted air, breathing disorders, asthma, bronchitus, not to mention climate change.
This bill very likely will raise energy costs in the medium terms, but this needs to be weighed against the medium and long term costs in terms of critical climate change-induced affects on our food and water supply, and the health of not only us but future generations.
What are our kids going to say if a bill of this magnitude isn't passed? - Mum, Dad, you were against a bill that could have meant clean air for me and that could have protected the environment.....all because it would have cost you a buck??

the thing that perplexes me the most about america is that in the '70s it was in the forefront of protecting the planet then came along ronny and george..... never mind.

Indeed, this bill is probably the biggest attempt to destroy the US economy in the past 50 years. Despite what Pelosi says about it creating millions of jobs, it will cost millions more. For every job created, more then 2 will be lost. Estimates put the figures at job losses, after including the eco jobs, at over a million jobs a year. The increased cost for a family of 4 averages out to about 3000 dollars a year, making this the largest tax increase in American history. Not only that, but the costs increase over the long term as well. The estimated cost over the next 25 years is more then $70k per household. Money they previously would have had to spend elsewhere.
Oh, and because the Obamanation is a socialist, they included some redistribution as well. Poor people, will receive a direct deposit for the money this bill costs them. So people who aren't under the poverty line, will be paying those who are. Hooray!
Sorry, you must mean a fallacy. And you're behind the times. Since pretty much everyone is confirming we have global cooling, the eco-nuts are now calling it climate change, not global warming. As if the climate isn't changing all the time as it is. Seriously, anyone who buys into this garbage needs their head examined. The scientists own models don't even support their statements. In fact they came out and admitted that if Kyoto was implemented immediately, according to their climate models, there would be absolutely no change. Kinda surprising. But then since the models are flawed, it really isn't.

Well, I wouldn't say global warming is a "fact" or a "hoax." Instead, I would say global warming is getting into the reality of US public culture, but most Americans are not sure how it will affect their lives in general, because it hasn't taken its shape yet. Nevertheless, it's becoming an increasing concern among American people day by day, year by year, since it is affecting the economy of some states in the Pacific Coast-- such as the California State. I'm not sure about an entire impact on the US as an entire soil, if the congress passes the climate bill. I just need to keep plugged in.

What is concerning, is the cost this bill is going to have on the US economy. I hate to admit, but I'm really beginning to wonder what Obama's goals for the country are. Is he deliberately trying to nuke the US economy? Because he is doing a damn good job of it. What with the spendulus bill, and now this... Spend, Spend, Spend, Tax, Tax, Tax. People were ripping at Republicans for overspending. Lets hear it for Dems, who put the Republicans to shame.

I guess i spoke too soon.
"The stink surrounding the Pelosi-Waxman-Markey cap-and-tax bill has become vomit-inducing overnight. Representative Waxman has decided to replace the 1091-page bill with a 300-page bill that will be debated for no longer than three hours today. So your elected representatives will have virtually no time to debate the merits of an economy-spanning bill they will not have had time to read. Speaker Pelosi and her sidekick Waxman are displaying nothing more than complete contempt for the democratic process."

What, no libs to defend Obama's new plan? No Libs to tell us how wonderful it is that Obama is going to cost US households thousands of dollars in a time of recession, and how he is personally going to put millions of people out of work? Please, tell us how wonderful your 'savior' is.

"Sunlight before signing"?
That was just a campaign pledge, silly rabbits.
It was officially abandoned this week.

Conservatives frustration at the inability of the GOP to save jobs that are going to disappear anyway and their desperate attempts to try to ensure their kids and grandkids choke on polluted air and get any number of pollution-linked diseases all to save a buck here and a job there is hilarious at best, incredibly sad at worst.
The Artic is shrinking and the northern pole may be ice free within 10 years - not sure quite what part of that the global warming deniers can't understand. What I understand is that most of the global warming deniers on JapanToday also believed Saddam had WMD and no one took them seriously then, either. :-)

Can't these wishy-washy Democrats make up their minds?

The fact is, humans, as of 2009, are powerless to stop or even slow down the Earth's natural changes. The only thing humans can do is deal with the changing situation.

susisake:
Fascinating. I guess I has been in Japan too long. All that ice displaced would mean waterfront property prices where you are from are down so precipitously even a schmuck like me could buy in.
Got a link for me to real estate sites where waterfront property owners in your country - aware no doubt, like you are, of how all the meting means rising sea levels - are unloading such property?
Maybe I could retire there, even come to share the enlightened world view you hold.
Waiting...

Obama was most eager to call him a friend during the campaign. But now it's different I suspect:
WARREN BUFFETT, CEO, BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY: I think if you get into the way it was written, it's [the Waxman - Markey bogus climate bill] a huge tax and there's no sense calling it anything else. I mean, it is a tax. So it -- and it's a fairly regressive tax.
