Poor guy. He probably bailed out and got tangled in the jungle and just hung there, hoping someone would come along.

Some really major stories from WWII and New Guinea, stuff that is not taught in Japan at all.

It's always partly amazing when stuff like this from WWII comes back in the present day... like when they find an old bomber under shallow waters, etc. Of course, this is a human being we are talking about, and the situation at the time, and fact that he was left alone for so long, are a terrible reminder of the worst of humanity, but at least he was found. I just hope some ID can be found, and he can finally be laid to rest. Poor fella.

Smithinjapan, do a search for Truk lagoon, very interesting place full of Japanese war junk.

Probably some soldiers yelled out to him and asked, "Hey, what are you doing?, to which he replied, "Just hanging around ...". It was such a bad joke they decided not to resuce him!!

But with his uniform and other equipment still there, I'm sure they'll at least be able to identify which country he came from.

    Maybe its Amelia Earhart....

Seriously though, a lot is hidden in those island jungles. I remember living in Guam when they found Sgt. Yokoi, who believed the war was still going on. I wonder what it was like for him to return to Japan in the '70's. Talk about Rip Van Winkle, or should I say Urashima Taro...

Did he forgot his katana to cut himself loose? or was he allready dead when he hit the canopy?

  • okapake at 07:31 PM JST - 28th August

  • Beelzebub at 09:17 PM JST - 28th August

Quite amazing they found it at all. They'll probably never find all the bodies in that jungle.

David Collins, an Australian tour guide from No-Roads trekking company

I hope this is not a con job by this tour guide company just to get free advertising. I find it hard to believe that the canvas harness could hold up for all these years exposed to the elements. Steel planes are one thing but canvas parachute harness is something else. No something here is not right!

Maybe it is D. B. Cooper.....- TJrandom

Oh come on TJrandom how could it...well the winds were pretty strong that day...maybe?

News Flash...this just in..Big Foot has been spotted in a tree in New Guinea...film at 11:00.

I don't know, silk and synthetic fibers might well hold up, but I don't think the canvas would unless it was treated. Going to be interesting to find out who this is and give him the respect owed for the sacrifice for country.
