Hospital announces Taiwan's interior minister-designate dead

TAIPEI —

Taiwan’s Interior Minister-designate Liao Feng-te died Saturday after having earlier in the day collapsed while hiking, local media reported. The Central News Agency quoted Wan Fang Hospital officials as saying Liao, a veteran lawmaker of the Nationalist Party (KMT), died despite an all-out effort to resuscitate him.

Liao reportedly collapsed while hiking in Muzha, a suburb of Taipei, and had no signs of life when paramedics arrived on the scene. Liao, deputy secretary general of the KMT, was on April 21 named by President-elect Ma Ying-jeou to become interior minister in his Cabinet.
