I wish theyd take some lessons from the Taiji fisherman and pound those sharks to pieces.

Perfect shark conditions AND a travel route for sharks, particularly great whites... Hmm... Not the smartest idea to go for a surf IMHO.

He was surfing near seals while other animals were feeding, gotta sk yourself something here. Why hunt the shark, is it for revenge or?
The shark was in its natural enviroment doing what it normally would do, the surfer ventured into the sharks habitat, no blame can be put on the shark what so ever, leave it alone and dont go surfing when seals are being hunted by its natural predator.
Lame people getting biten by sharks now they want to catch the shark c'mon !

I foresee an increase in shark-hunting tours in that area, same as happened after the "Jaws" Movie when getting rid of that "bad" fish became a major fad.

Where I surf at shonan, there has never been an incident. But when I visit family in Florida, that can get a bit dangerous.

This stuff happens, when you are in the water, no matter how big and bad ass you think you are back on land, WE ARE NOTHING compared to sharks, let alone great white sharks, they are the bad asses of the sea for millions and millions of years ago, so if we go and mess around in their NATURAL HABITAT hey guess what?? We are way down on the food chain, so we should not be surprised sitting on a surfboard and being mistaken for a seal and what not, Anyway, RIP Aussie surfer dude.

Elbuda.
100% agree. Put a human as he was born against a wild animal(as it was born) and we know who wins.
Our brains, intelligence, etc mean nothing when we are face to face barehanded with a wild animal(heck even a domesticated pet).
RIP, Guy.

Jared,
Sorry mate but you are way off the mark there. Sharks only attack if threatened? BS sharks attack when they mistake people for their normal food. And as for there only being 3 types of dangerous sharks try again, the following are all considered dangerous to humans Whaler, Tiger, Great white, Mako, Grey nurse, Hammerhead, Bull.

RIP to the guy. Shark fatalities are so rare - they average 1.4 people per year in the past decade in Aus. The real danger if you spend too much time at the beach/outside is dying of skin cancer - more than 1400 deaths in Australia per year. I know which one I worry about!

Try them off the aussie coast when they do swim in large schools. Wanted to dive but was refused to enter the water. Pity as I was there only for 3 days.

The sight of one of two things will get me out of the water real quick, one is sharks and the other is toilet paper floating past.

The tigers only come in Jan/Feb other then that you are safe.

Hammerheads scare me, but it is the tigers in Florida that go in a frenzy at times.

It was a body boarder by the way and not a surfer. Different being.

So they're going to hunt and kill this shark because it was in its natural habitat and did exactly what it's been genetically programmed to do as a result of 420 million years of evolution? Some people need to re-examine their perspective. RIP Kyle Burden, but IMO you don't deserve much sympathy for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

If you read the story, you'll see that there is no plan to kill the shark.

I guess they'll bring in all the usual suspects and do a lineup.
Seriously, there is NO WAY to catch that particular shark - and the only other choice is indiscriminate slaughter. It would be best to write the whole tragedy off as a lesson to the fact that we do not, in fact, dominate the planet.

Nature does what it was meant to do, kill to survive - sometimes being in the wrong place at the wrong time can lead to you being the prey. Man will never learn! Just remember -nature is man's number one enemy.

Moderator,
Can you please fix this story as it is incorrect, it says there has been no fatal shark attacks in Australia since February, there was one last week.
Moderator
There is no report of any shark attack last week.

There was a man mauled by a shark last week in Queensland, but it was not possible to tell if the wounds were inflicted before or after his death. A post-mortem is being conducted in Townsville to determine whether the man drowned, died of natural causes or was killed by sharks.

Regardless of this article's claim that the authorities are supposedly going to find and 'usher the shark out to sea' ten bucks says we'll be seeing an article here in a few days about how they caught and killed the shark to prevent another attack/death.

"The risk of being attacked while in the water is very low"
Tell that to the family members and friends of those who have been attacked.
"there is no plan to kill the shark"
Must be they are planning to capture it and feed it for the rest of its life.
