The more I hear and read about Iceland, the more interesting a country it seems to be. A lot in common with Japan, oddly enough - at least, that's what i got from an interesting book I read. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/184708415X/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My opinion - I hope that Snowden gets to safe haven. Only then can proper discussions about what he did begin.

Contentious IceLand Citizenship and Bobby Fischer:

In 1975, Fischer declined to defend his title when he could not reach agreement with FIDE over the conditions for the match. He became more reclusive and did not play competitive chess again until 1992, when he won an unofficial rematch against Spassky. The competition was held in Yugoslavia, which was then under a United Nations embargo.[1][2][3] This led to a conflict with the U.S. government, which was also seeking income tax from Fischer on his match winnings. Fischer never returned to his native country (USA). In his later years, Fischer lived in Hungary, Germany, the Philippines, Japan, and Iceland. During this time he made increasingly anti-American and anti-semitic statements. After his U.S. passport was revoked over the Yugoslavia sanctions issue, he was detained (imprisoned) by Japanese authorities for nine months in 2004 and 2005 under threat of deportation. In March 2005, Iceland granted him full citizenship.[5] The Japanese authorities then released Fischer to Iceland, where he lived until his death in 2008.[6]

Arrrrrrrrrrrr!

Iceland also jailed its bankers and restored their economy by bailing out the people hurt by the banker's crimes. It also has the oldest democracy in the world still functioning. And yes it still hunts whales.

It's going to have to be Iceland or bust for Snowden. From where he sits in Moscow, Iceland is the only viable option considering probably no commercial airline will be willing to fly him out of Moscow so he will have to fly via someone's private business jet and the only likely destination within range (of one tank of gas) that he can reach without leaving international airspace is Iceland.

The Vikings to the rescue.

My opinion, I hope the guy freezes. The only discussion I would like to see happen is Snowden in an interrogation room with a lawyer and a prosecutor filing espionage and a slew of other charges against him.

He'll be snowed in forever.

@bass4funk,

Meanwhile back at the ranch thug politicians and others get away with whatever they like.

I think all Americans who live abroad soon realize that the US government doesn't really give a shyt about us unless there is some political or military gain or purpose. You are on your own.

If we didn't give a crap, then all of you guys would be speaking German and eating Schnitzel (with fresh lemon) Of course we are on our own, always have been technically speaking, so, NO worries.

Although what Mr. Snowden did is probably illegal and detrimental to the US, I question the competency of the NSA in giving him access to such materials that can so easily be divulged.

Probably illegal???? But Yes, I too, question the competency of the NSA for giving a high school drop out that kind of clearance to be able to obtain these sensitive documents.

To put things in perspective, the ruling coalition in Iceland has 38 members in its parliament. The Left-Green has 7, the Bright Future Party has 6, and the Pirate Party has 3. Neither of the ruling parties or the other minority parties appear to support the proposal to give Snowden Icelandic citizenship.

Whoops....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-23178284

"France's foreign intelligence service intercepts computer and telephone data on a vast scale, like the controversial US Prism programme, according to the French daily Le Monde. The operation is "outside the law, and beyond any proper supervision", Le Monde says."

Looks like we have 2 evil countries in the world.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Remember Anna Chapman, our little red-headed Russian spy? Well she evidently recently tweeted that she wants to marry Snowden. Of course her own country would never allow that, but they certainly do deserve each other.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

the US populace has NEVER been at risk to be forced to speak German. Thanks mainly to the Russians, Germany was broken in WWII, and even if it hadn't been overwhelmed by Russia, Germany would NEVER have been able to invade the US.

Uh, I was talking about Europe.

You are most certainly welcome.

The proposal to grant Snowden citizenship received limited support when it was discussed Thursday - the last day before summer recess. Six members of minority parties were in favor out of Parliament's 63 members.

That doesn't look too promising for Snowden.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Iceland seems like a good place he would then be, Snowed in. Yuk, Yuk.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The smear campaign against Snowden has worked well.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Once again, the Vikings show courage, where the European Union shamefull caved. Iceland did the right thing in dealing with its banking crisis, and is doing the right thing here.

bass4funk: "My opinion, I hope the guy freezes. The only discussion I would like to see happen is Snowden in an interrogation room with a lawyer and a prosecutor filing espionage and a slew of other charges against him."

People seem to be living there pretty well without freezing, despite your best wishes to the contrary. Shows how shallow people can be, I guess. If he's in an interrogation room, I hope it's right along side the TRUE criminals, like bush, cheney, and Obama and the current admin for trampling on the constitution, breaking the laws they swear to uphold, abusing human rights while decrying other nations for doing so, etc. What Snowden did is not even close in terms of the illegalities, and it's fun to watch people like yourself support the former US government in doing far more illegal activities, then in utter embarrassment decry Obama for doing the same, then insist despite the current government engaging in similar behaviour as the last saying they are correct. Again with the flip-flopping ("I'm not embarrassed! No wait, I AM embarrassed" -- your words!).

Anyway, glad some nations still have a good head on their shoulders, and here's hoping Snowden reveals further information on illegal US programs from a safe haven like Iceland or Ecuador (and he will be kept safe in one of those or another nation).

"Uh, I was talking about Europe. You are most certainly welcome."

If you're talking about Europe, what on earth are you taking thanks for? the US being too afraid to enter into the world wars until the last minute or when attacked after sitting on their hands (they flubbed intelligence data leading up to Pearl Harbor as well -- further indication they just don't learn).

Smith, do you think the Canadian government knew anything about PRISM or used any of the information?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

SuperLib

Smith, do you think the Canadian government knew anything about PRISM or used any of the information?

Of course not! No other government knew about the U.S.' covert espionage, availed themselves of the information gathered by it, or ever does any spying on friends or enemies. How could you even suggest it?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I see from 68 members on the Icelandic Gov to 38 what is it ? , BTW the more I dig into ANY countries CIA, KGB Mossad etc. Those behind the scenes so called " security" or "safety" or "we are looking after you agencies", history all over the world for thousands of years have shown those people are anything BUT looking after you. That also includes the UN what a sink-hole that is, (i think that's how insurance agencies work as well).

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@smith

People seem to be living there pretty well without freezing, despite your best wishes to the contrary.

I reckon you didn't read in from that, as what I really meant, but ok....lol

Shows how shallow people can be, I guess. If he's in an interrogation room, I hope it's right along side the TRUE criminals, like bush, cheney, and Obama and the current admin for trampling on the constitution, breaking the laws they swear to uphold, abusing human rights while decrying other nations for doing so, etc.

Buddy, it will never happen, comparing Bush, Cheney to Snowden is like comparing John Dillinger to Mickey Mouse. Funny,I never saw Bush and Cheney running to some foreign country like Snowden, even when the liberals were raving that he should have been "tarred and feathered." They are still here, looking fine and relaxed, while that piece of Turd is desperately trying to find a place to stay. Smith, Snowden is the only one hat walked over the constitution.

What Snowden did is not even close in terms of the illegalities,

WTF? Now you are sounding lost, seriously. ROFL

and it's fun to watch people like yourself support the former US government in doing far more illegal activities,

FAR MORE, really? Like what? Please tell me.

then in utter embarrassment decry Obama for doing the same, then insist despite the current government engaging in similar behaviour as the last saying they are correct. Again with the flip-flopping ("I'm not embarrassed! No wait, I AM embarrassed" -- your words!).

Ahh, no sorry, I'm embarrassed that our President is doing nothing to stop this criminal. I'm embarrassed that we have an IRS that spies on overwhelmingly conservatives and went after James Rosen from Fox, making it a personal investigation which had nothing to do tax and audits.

Anyway, glad some nations still have a good head on their shoulders,

You mean like the communist, dictator run countries, that love to squash the press and ANY opposition and these same countries that think "Democracy" is a bad word? The same countries that think Fidel, Hugo and Che are the best and most honest and righteous leaders of the free world? Yeah, good thing for that....

and here's hoping Snowden reveals further information on illegal US programs from a safe haven like Iceland or Ecuador (and he will be kept safe in one of those or another nation).

Actually, while he's at it, I hope he also exposes the Europeans and hypocrite behavior to what's going on and NOT be selective in what he releases to the public of only US material. Because if he doesn't, then we know for sure, he's just being bias and selective about what intel he wants to release. But like I said, you wouldn't know ANYTHING about the spy agency and how it operates going by your comments.

If you're talking about Europe, what on earth are you taking thanks for? the US being too afraid to enter into the world wars until the last minute or when attacked after sitting on their hands (they flubbed intelligence data leading up to Pearl Harbor as well -- further indication they just don't learn).

smith, you were still saved by the US, end result. My grandfather was fighting there on D-Day. Like I said, you are very welcome.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

I'd far rather live in Iceland than in Venezuela. Good for Iceland and Snowden.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

"I think all Americans who live abroad soon realize that the US government doesn't really give a shyt about us unless there is some political or military gain or purpose. You are on your own."

@MumbaiRocks!:

You don't even need to live abroad to figure that out.

bassfung, " Smith, Snowden is the only one hat walked over the constitution."

You repeat this same thing, but you've yet to specify which article he "walked over ". Why not?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

@Bass

high school drop out

Not sure if it's true, I hope you can use your NSA clearance to find out, but I read that his father described him as a college drop-in, not a high school D O. Can you check for me please?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Not true. Snowden got a GED. That's just a lame part of the smear campaign. He managed to get a high level clearance. The smear is BS.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Over 100,000 American soldiers are buried in European cemeteries. Tell their families they arrived late.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

@Jean

You repeat this same thing, but you've yet to specify which article he "walked over ". Why not?

Meaning the entire constitution which encompasses most laws to uphold the oath that he took to safeguard the vital intel against foreign and domestic entities friend or foe unless otherwise specified and given a proper clearance.

@Fizz

Not sure if it's true, I hope you can use your NSA clearance to find out, but I read that his father described him as a college drop-in, not a high school D O. Can you check for me please?

Sure thing buddy.

@Jeannie

Not true. Snowden got a GED. That's just a lame part of the smear campaign. He managed to get a high level clearance. The smear is BS.

Sorry, but I'm calling you out! Snowden DID NOT graduate HS. He got his GED at a community college, the BS is when people like you go out and start dishing out disinformation!

Edward Snowden grew up in North Carolina and Maryland. In an interview with British newspaper The Guardian, he said he never completed high school, but studied computing at a Maryland community college and obtained a General Educational Development diploma.

@wipeout

Let's keep this short and to the point. Thank you about telling me about my own ancestry, fact of the matter is, that Hitler did want to expand Germany to as far east as Moscow and beyond and one of his dreams was to infiltrate and encourage American Germans communities that were sympathetic to the Reich cause to plant seeds to influence them and hopefully embracing it, nurturing it and allowing the ideologies to spread, eventually indoctrinating America and Americans and hopefully overthrow the government. Also, I wasn't talking about Ireland, but Switzerland and Sweden, definitely they were on Hitler's list as well. Hitler, remember the man that broke the Versailles treaty , so again, "Yes, you'd all be basically be speaking German." But thanks anyway.

The future another party of Iceland will be name "Hacker Party". The country future will be brightening by Pirate Party and Hacker Party. I don't know whether Iceland has jail or not. It sound like they welcome all criminals from around the world.

It sound like they welcome all criminals from around the world.

The Iceland banksters ran to the City of London when it was found out most of their "loans" were fraudulent. Iceland is actually quite nice with huge geothermal resources. Greenland is the opposite and cold.

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/iceland/travel-tips-and-articles/76915

Thanks to the country’s geothermal energy, virtually every town in Iceland has a naturally heated pool. As you drive through the country, you are likely to notice steam leaking from crevices or spewing ahead on the horizon — evidence of geothermal vents and hot springs. Piping hot water is siphoned off to public pools, where the water is minimally treated to keep it as pure as possible.

True, but you get my overall point.
