I am going to guess that the apple does not fall too far from the tree on this one.

two teenage girls who were found hanging from a tree after being gang-raped.

So many cheered when the penalties for rape went up in India over-night. I said the result would be that fewer victims would be allowed to live. When people get in an emotional stupor, they fail to think ahead.

Only a thorough police probe would confirm whether the girls were murdered or they committed suicide, the officer told AFP.

Being that people close to the accused beat the mother of one of the victims, I'm pretty sure you can rule out suicide. Just saying.

The father of the rapist was arrested by our team this morning. Other accused shall be arrested shortly, local police chief R. K. Chaturvedi told AFP.

Shouldn't an officer be saying the "accused" rapist? Sounds like he's already made up his mind

@cruisin

The two girls are completely unrelated to the case of the mother and daughter. They're two separate cases mentioned because they both happened this week.

Fine people, those...

Seems it's time for India to shape the hell up and get with the times.

"India's dismal record on preventing sexual violence"

Whose fault is this?

Pakistan and India come from the same caste: barbarian.

I recommend they lock the guy up with the wifes husband and may the best barbarian win!

"The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons"

The legal reasons being India is not willing to change laws that protect rapists.

"Police said Friday that three people, including a police constable, had been arrested in connection with the attack on the cousins, aged 14 and 15 who were found hanging on Wednesday."

And there you have it; one of the rapists was a police officer himself. I wonder what kind of suspended sentence he'll get. Or it being India, perhaps a silent promotion?

"Mukul Goel, a senior police officer, told AFP that it had still not been determined whether the victims had committed suicide or been strung up as a way of silencing them after they were raped."

Set-ups take time even in devolved communities when such news is international. The fact that they are already suggesting the focus is on potential suicides and not the rapes themselves, with at least one member being internal, is proof they will not take this seriously and will definitely change nothing. How many women being killed in such grisely manners after being raped -- and by police for that matter, will it take? Lock the officer up for life, no parole. Get him to confess and give up the others, no leniency, and honor the two, poor, young women and you might get a bit of support in your efforts to do little more than nothing, and only when you're caught.

??? Perhaps you'd care to explain how protect the victim's identity has anything to do with protecting rapists? Because I haven't the foggest idea what you are trying to say here.

Just curious...but, I wonder why China, with its higher population and same poverty level as India, doesn't have nearly as many of these types of rapes/assaults on its citizens/tourists. Actually, I haven't read any involving China, which is strange, given the Western media's China-bashing tendencies.

OK, so I'm thinking ahead... Using your logic, then eliminating all rape laws would ensure more rape victims are allowed to live... to get raped over, and over, and over. I think I see a flaw in your reasoning. But congratulations (or something) for being "right".

"The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons"

Usually relatives of a rape victim are not named in order to protect the privacy of the victim, not protect the rapist.

I hope they get arrested and never see the sun light again. And that the rapist son gets the word "Rapist" tattooed on his chest, along with a life sentence if he is guilty of the crime.

I guess there is no safety for women in India. Pathetic.

The father and son should share in the penalty for their crimes in the same way they share the guilt.

Not forehead? I would do that on the forehead.
