Indonesia looks at leaving OPEC

JAKARTA —

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Tuesday that Indonesia may quit the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries because his country has become a net oil importer. ‘‘In the latest Cabinet meeting, we were considering whether to continue staying with OPEC or to pull out while we increase our domestic production,’’ Yudhoyono was quoted as saying by the Antara News Agency.

Yudhoyono said the country’s crude oil production has declined to fewer than a million barrels a day due to aging oil wells, Antara said. However, he is optimistic the country, Asia’s only member of OPEC, could improve its production capacity within a year or two.
