Bravo Indonesia!! Now is the chance to prove it is a modern country not backwards say like Pakistan or Iran. Time to let these terrorists hang and burn in hell!!! IMHO.

I think you misunderstood this article. The cleric has had his sentence cut. That means he will be free sooner, not later.

You get almost as long in an Indonesian jail for buying $25 of marijuana as you do for funding terrorism. Nice to see where their priorities lie.

It's very difficult for Indonesian courts to iompose really stiff sentences on the clerics here. This is the most populous muslim country on Earth. These guys are even allowed to hold religous teaching meetings in prison where they recruit new fundamentalists. The government is trying to stop this but meeting some resistance. Generally the Indonesians are pretty tolarent of other religions but people selling or buying or eating food during daylight hours during Ramadan can get arrested (2 months in prison and a stiff fine). Police exempt most hotel bars and restaurants from this and some bars catering to foreigners open after sundown during Ramadan but I think of the Bali bombings and tend to avoid them.

The chief judge verbally confirmed that Bashir’s sentence has been reduced to nine years,” the Jakarta High Court spokesman Ahmad Sobari said, declining to give reasons for the decision until a court transcript is released.

OOPS!! Stupid, stupid Indonesia! Forget about Malaysia Ms.Otani this is way worse! Letting a terrorist like this off!

    Elbuda Mexicano:

You ahve to consider three things here:

    1. He is 73 so surviving 9 years is prison is not an easy task, and if he does he will be well on in years.
    2. As I said, he still has followers and can preach his hate whether in jail or not.
    3. The government showing SOME lenience helps abate some of the anger over jailing him in the first place.

They are walking and tightrope here.

Look at his smiling face and you will learn that punishment he deserves was beyond modern judical system could given!

There is no surprise there. Indonesian courts give islamists the silk-glove treatment time and time again. Even while in prison, Bashid lives a priviled life. No such mercy for others, though.

I can't understand the thumbs down to WilliB, He's pretty much right.

Well WilliB, guess anybody who agrees with you gets a thumbs down too!

This guy Bashir must have been bullied as a kid.

Now he is getting his kicks encouraging violence against normal society, and it is all justifiable depending on how you interpret the scripture. Win-win.

Denying the humanity of others. Religiocentric.

Interesting decision, you take drugs to Indonesia and you get life in prison or death penalty. You organise mass murder of foreigners and you get your sentence reduced. Should have executed this dog and been done with it, and feed him to the pigs just to really upset his martyrdom.

This evil ideologue, this plank-toothed monster is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent people who were targeted solely for their 'crime' of being non-Muslim. Indonesia is one messed up country.

Most of those killed in cold blood in Bali, Indonesia were AUSTRALIANS, maybe, just maybe Australia should send Indonesia a strong message, BOYCOTT travel to Bali etc.??? Until this old, retarded twisted pervert radical fool SWINGS from the nearest ROPE?? IMHO. Time for the world to pressure Indonesia to kill off its terrorists ASAP!

@Elbuda Mexicano: There was a bomb planted at the American Councilate the same night as the Bali club bombings but was a dud. The terrorists switched their targets from Embassies and councilates to commerical establishments because security was too tight around the government buildings. Last year there was a failed plot to bomb the Singapore Embasshy in Jakarta and shoot anyone and everyone who come out. There was a Easter plot to bomb a christian church on easter sunday too but it was discovered literally hours before it was to happen. Scarry!!!
