What do you mean?? Iran does have a real military. And yes, Shiite Iran is absolutely no friend of the Sunni ISIS Caliphate. That does not mean, however, that Iran is a friend of the West.

@WilliB I just mean that the US defense spending is something like 40x that of Iran's. Things could be really dicey over Iraq considering the cooperation between the two is essentially non-existent.

You can be sure that there is some coordination between Iran, Iraq and the US about Iranian air strikes in that border region, even if you don´t read it in the newspapers.

And, by the way, Obama is quite happily cooperating with the Iranian mullahs by blocking any sanctions against them and allowing them to proceed full throttle with their nuclear bomb program.

Would these "real militaries " be the same ones that have been so successful in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Read the newspaper anytime during the past five years? My friends in Iran would be interested to hear how Obama is coddling the mullahs, what with their living standards down to subsistence levels.

I hope that this window of cooperation, as unofficial as it is, will prod the Iranian government to accept the good faith of the American government in these negotiations so that the two countries can finally put decades of silliness behind them and move to exploit their obvious common interests.

Can you list those common interests? The Iranian Ayatollhas want to Iran to to have the nuclear bomb, to submit the world under Shariah law, to destroy the "dirty bacteria" Israel and the "great Satan" USA, for starters. Which one of those do you think are common interests with your government?
