The 4.4% of domestic US consumption from Iraq oil in 2013?

Mission accomplished!

Obama may not want to send troops back to Iraq and get too involved, but the war industry in the US, like any industry, needs a market to keep producing, selling, consuming and producing again, which it the problem when an important part of one's economy is built on aggression and destruction. It was never in the cards that the US would keep itself on more of a peace track for long. The boys in the Pentagon, deeply tied to weapons manufactures, together with pressure from big oil, will insist that he has no other choice and he will likely capitulate, as he has to the financial industry.

There's no love lost between ISIS and the Sunni tribes, their only bond a common enemy in al-Maliki.

Myopic as ever, though, Iraq's Bigot-in-Chief has ruled out power sharing:

Obama is NOT done yet.

Hope so! The oil that the Iraqis needed to pay for their economies and us for helping them rebuild a lot of their infrastructure and if and when the fighting stops, they will need as much oil as they can to rebuild everything all over again.

@warispeace

Drinking a little bit too much of that Kool-aid.

U.S. special forces troops and intelligence analysts arrived to help Iraqi security forces counter a mounting Sunni insurgency.

Obama is a lawyer. He thinks Baghad is the court room for the cross examination between Sunni insurgents and Shitte majority population. While US experts are advising the Iragi military commanders, their meeting room will be seized by insurgents within a few days.

In recent days, Baghdad’s grip on the Western frontier with Syria and Jordan has also been challenged.

At the end, Obama and Kerry are all talks and lack the substances. ISIS are advancing toward Baghad. Their trophy is not only Irag but also Jordan and Syria for establishing the United States of Sunni Islamic Saudi Arabia empire.

@zenpun

Why is it you clearly understand this and so many on JT don't? Excellent and accurate analysis.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Zenpun, you are correct: Obama understands that this battle will not be won by bullets but by convincing Iraqis of various tribes and sects that cooperation leads to better results than confrontation.

Biden said long ago that Iraq should be split into a federation of Sunni, Shia and Kurdish states. That is what is happening. If the Shia government of Malaki does not desire this, then "cross examination between Sunni insurgents and Shitte majority population" is exactly what is required. Whether Iraq will survive as a single nation - and in what form - is for the inhabitants to decide.

The United States cannot and should not impose what would only be a temporary pacification of this centuries-long problem.

Laguna:

" Biden said long ago that Iraq should be split into a federation of Sunni, Shia and Kurdish states. "

That is actually one of the rare moments where he said something sensible.

But it did not last long. Remember that in 2010 he declared the Maliki government a great success, and Obamas unconditional withdrawal from Iraq one of Obamas "greatest achievements".

Joe Biden has a record of being all over the map with his statements.

what's the betting these 300 "advisors" come under attack from both Shia and Sunni

US involvement has always been about the oil. When access to it gets hampered, action is taken.

How come these Muslims can't get along with each other?

@Serrano

A bit like the Christians in Ulster, no?

'How come these Muslims can't get along with each other?'

Because they take religion seriously.
