Israel is swopping a live and well jihadist with the dead (and probably tortured bodies) of Jews from Hizbollah. One couldn`t think of a better demonstration of the nature of this conflict.

"A coffin apparently containing body parts"

    Sicko's.

I can't see why anyone is against this.

No doubt some view it as a form of appeasement. Yet such swaps have a long history in the region. Israel was part of the Iran Contra Affair where Washington traded weapons for hostages in Lebanon with Tehran which in turn funneled part of the proceeds to the anti-Marxist resistance in Nicaragua.

Fascinating. What role did Israel play in the Iran-Contra affair specifically?

You actually know something about the region and the players involved.

smithinjapan couldn't be any more clueless

Zaphod: aside from misdirected racism, why would you assume they were tortured?

Are you trying to say that Shiite Moslems are a separate race or something?

Fascinating. What role did Israel play in the Iran-Contra affair specifically?

During the 1980s Israel in fact sold weapons to Iran because Saddam and his pan-Arabism were seen as the bigger threat from Tel Aviv. As part of Iran Contra, the mullahs needed to buy spare parts from the US since they were fighting Iraq with weapons left behind by the shah (who had gotten them from the US).

When this unsavory arrangement came to light some Reagan administration officials claimed it was helping moderates with Tehran. Washington didn't know the Islamic Republic government well enough to identify moderate elements, but the Israelis did. Not that the explanation went over....
