The Holy See is ALWAYS surprised when their roiled in scandal. Look at the sexual abuse of young boys -- they've been 'surprised' for ages and are only now admitting they actually knew about it and it was a mistake.

Anyway, someone will take the fall and then it'll be back to business as usual.

Their surprise is more like "how dare YOU question US about this?" I also like how the Holy SEE refuses to have an international police body look at the records of pedaphile priests. Surprised at that request too! And it was big heck NO for that one. Raping boys is a perk it seems!
