Jewish settlers rampage in West Bank
NABLUS, West Bank —
Jewish settlers rampaged in the West Bank on Monday, wounding four Palestinians, as they vented fury that Israel may answer U.S. calls and dismantle outposts in the territory, officials said.
Jewish extremists blocked roads, hurled rocks at drivers, burned fields, cut down olive trees and opened fire towards Palestinians who tried to chase the trespassers from their fields in the northern West Bank, witnesses said.
West of the city of Nablus, an area home to some of the most hardline settlers in the occupied territory, dozens of masked extremists blocked a road in the early hours and hurled rocks at Palestinian drivers who stopped their vehicles to move the obstructions, they said.
“They attacked when the minibus (carrying 17 Palestinian workers on their way to work in Israel) stopped. The man next to the driver was seriously wounded,” said Zakaria Sada, an activist with the Rabbis for Human Rights organization.
When another driver stopped his vehicle to move the stones in the road, the mob beat him until Israeli troops arrived on the scene, Sada said.
Four people were wounded in the attacks, and one remained in serious condition in hospital with a fractured skull, medics said.
Near the settlement of Yizhar—one of the most radical in the West Bank—heavy smoke billowed into the air as settlers set fire to Palestinian fields.
When a group of Palestinians threw stones trying to chase them off the land, about 20 settlers armed with guns jumped out from hiding places and opened fire in the direction of the Palestinians and journalists, a correspondent said.
Three army patrol vehicles at a nearby junction stood by and did not intervene to stop the violence, but prevented a Palestinian fire-engine from reaching the field.
The police and army had no immediate comment.
“These sorts of rock hurling incidents are unfortunately very common in the West Bank,” one army spokesman said as he tried to search for information on the incidents.
Angry mobs of settlers also set fire to fields, sawed down olive trees and threw rocks at Palestinians outside the villages of Burin and Far’ata south of Nablus.
“It took us six months to plant everything, this is our whole life,” Shaher Tawil said, as his fields of wheat and olive trees burned on the outskirts of Far-ata.
Asked to comment on the violence, the president of a settler umbrella organization in the northern West Bank, Gershon Messika, said: “It’s natural that people who face expulsion from their house do what they can to avoid being expelled.”
Groups of settlers converged on the area overnight after rumors spread that Israeli security forces were moving in to evacuate settlement outposts.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to dismantle several dozen wildcat outposts—settlements that were erected in the West Bank without government approval—in response to demands from Washington, which has called to a halt to all Israeli settlement activity.
“Our intention is to dismantle the unlawful outposts,” Netanyahu told a parliamentary committee on Monday, while pledging to continue construction in other settlements to accommodate population growth.
In the past few weeks, Israeli police have taken down some tents and tin huts in the occupied territory, though the structures usually reappear within hours after troops leave.
On Monday police and army removed several shacks containing farming equipment outside the settlement of Elon Moreh northeast of Nablus. New shacks arose on the site within a few hours, local settlers said.
Hardline settlers believe the Jewish people have a God-given, biblical-era right to live on the land, though most of the more than 280,000 Israelis who live in the settlements dotting the West Bank are there for economic reasons.
The international community considers all Israeli settlements on occupied Arab land illegal, but Israel makes a distinction between those built with or without government approval.

I'm fairly sure that many Palestinian deed-holders know exactly how he feels.

I wonder if he said this without musing on what it is natural for people who have already been expelled.

Lies all lies. Israel doesn't have extremeists?
More lies. Israel doesn't do this stuff.
But if the citizens of Palestine retaliate, they are the extremeists. Remember last year? < :-)

Look how quick the media is to lambast the Jews.
When muslim Arabs shoot rockets at Jewish towns and murder Jews we hardly hear peep about it.
Fgg hypocrisy as always.

Jews are the original citizens of Palestine. Somehow that little fact went missing in your intensive studies.

That's not the issue here. You know it.
Now, you got something relevant. < :-)

Of course they have some extremists. It's amazing they don't have more considering they're surrounded by a hostile Muslim Arab population that preaches holy war against the Infidel and seeks the annihiliation of their country.

What better place to found a new and unnecessary nation! Think I'll build mine where I'm surrounded by hostiles, too. Maybe even take a huge chunk of their land and see what happens. I hope that won't force me to become an extremist.

It is interesting to watch the two sides debate everything but the very fact that these settlers were absolutely wrong.
All the other debate about this article is pretty much meaningless. Israel exists where it exists and Palestine will exist at some point. Both sides had better start getting used to the idea.

Great. The Israeli gov't needs to grow some balls and start going in and tearing these things down. They already have the bulldozers.

When a peace deal is reached that is exactly what will happen.

All displaced Muslims are extremists? Sounds pretty harsh....

Of course they aren't. And if you are suggesting that's what I said, you'll forgive me if I say that the suggestion sounds pretty ridiculous.

where did all these settlers used to call home before they emigrated back to their new found(homeland) subsidized by the taxpayers of the USA. Take your pick but probably russia. Its no use talking to these stiff necks just drag them out. This is just the start, happily Israel will be forced ,eventually, to vacate 95% of the occupied territories, unless the "expand israellat any cost" party get re-elected in the states that is.

For this beatnick however i dont know how you could even say that Between December and January 2008-2009 Israel killed over 1200 Gazans and less then 10 Israelis died, the Qassam rockets fired by Hamas are shit you guys have shelters and siren Gaza doesnt mainly because they cant afford it and it wouldent work because you cut bombed their power plant 2 years ago. Israel is the one that provokes Hamas by firing because of your damned embargo on Gaza.

You know they're scraping bottom when they start bringing up the Irgun and the King David Hotel from over half a century ago. First, the target was the British military, not civilians, which had set up their headquarters in the hotel. Second, the Irgun sent warnings prior to the bombing in order to evacuate the hotel, which the British ignored.
But if it's terrorism you're interested in, why not simply look at all the Muslim Arab terrorist groups murdering civilians right now....Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Tanzim, Hezbollah, PFLP, Al Aqsa, Al Qaeda,...
Right. Hamas will stop firing rockets as soon as the embargo is lifted. :-D

"Jewish extremists blocked roads, hurled rocks at drivers, burned fields, cut down olive trees and opened fire towards Palestinians who tried to chase the trespassers from their fields in the northern West Bank, witnesses said."
So now they're acting exactly like the Palestinians supposedly act, if you listen to the people on the right.
WilliB: "Look how quick the media is to lambast the Jews. When muslim Arabs shoot rockets at Jewish towns and murder Jews we hardly hear peep about it."
Not a peep? I think that's the funniest statement of the day. Go back to any of the threads where Israel was massacring the Palestinians after a few hobby rockets went nowhere near them and you'll see HUNDREDS of posts, possibly PER thread; the rationale behind the attacks was ONLY the rockets from Palestinians.

Helter: "But if it's terrorism you're interested in, why not simply look at all the Muslim Arab terrorist groups murdering civilians right now....Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Tanzim, Hezbollah, PFLP, Al Aqsa, Al Qaeda,..."
It's usually YOU who brings up terrorism, and has no qualms about calling for an end to Islam despite the fact that nearly no Muslims are terrorists. I have pointed out to you before that there is at least one Jewish terrorism group, and clearly a whole lot of radicals who are no better, so don't go dissing others for talking about terrorism when you choose to see it only as Muslims.

“despite the fact that nearly no Muslims are terrorists.”
What are you going to come up with now, that it is all a CIA plot to turn all the “free thinking Americans” against the Muslims? Just how have you managed to twist things for you to be able to write such rubbish?
Maybe if Israel started testing nuclear weapons very close to Gaza & maybe test fired a few rockets out to the Indian ocean we might hear a little less from the Muslim extremists because Iran might just get nervous &tell them to be quiet. Muslim terrorists commit atrocities in the US, Britain, Spain & elsewhere yet the Israelis are always the baddies? There none so blind as those that refuse to see. You will tell yourselves (& any who will listen) that you are not anti-Jewish while at the same time showing a degree of gullibility that is almost embarrassing to read. If the Muslims ever did take Israel & showed their usual care for prisoners will you accept that you were wrong or will you go on making excuses for the savage hoard? These settlers are extremists & when the time suits the Israeli government they will be moved. That is so obvious but being Jews they must be far worse than those nice young men of Hamas you are all so pleased to defend. Like me the settlers are angry, they are angry because nobody hears anything they say because they are Jews. You cannot hear them because you do not want to.

This is nothing new, it happens every time that these extremist are told they can not build on Arab lands. I am just surprised they did not kill anyone this time.
I love the way the news report tries to justify these extremist actions.
Those evil Palestinians trying to defend their lands how dare they!I can not believe that those evil Palestinians did not just sit there and let those good angry illegal settlers just have their way! LOL
Feel for those Palestinians they are just trying to make a living and these extremist go out and destroy anything that they own. Real sad, most likely the government will do nothing against these extremist.
Maybe a slap on the hand and a wink of the eye is what they will get.
This reminds me of a word that most far right fanatics do not like to hear when it comes to the Israeli/Palestinian problem;
Apartheid

I'm with you, Joe. I'm getting more than a little sick of calling these people "settlers." “Settler” has become a not-so-clever euphemism for State-sanctioned theft, violence, and illegal squatting on already occupied land. How can a nation justify terrorizing a civilian population based on some ridiculous Biblical nonsense, and not be called to task for it?
Any moral authority Israel had disappeared long ago with the spread of these "settlements" and each successive Israeli government’s unwillingness to stop them.
People want the Middle-East to find some sort of peace? Getting Israel to behave within the bounds of international law and not under the pretense of following some mystical Old Testament mumbo jumbo would be a great place to start.

Good point Helter_Skelter let just do just that. Hell why don't we look at some of the first terrorist in the region. Let us look at the terrorist who gave the Muslims the idea....
How about we talk about Lehi, Irgun or Haganah terrorist groups to name a few. You know the ones that started this whole mess. From bombing to assassinations these two groups laid the foundation for what we have today. Who were they you may ask.....Just google their names and be surprised...
These are just a few that operated during the 1930s until 1948. Why did they stop in 1948? That is when they joined the newly founded government of Israel. These terrorist traded their bombs for paper and became the leaders of Israel. Today they are hailed as heroes...
Never believe what anyone tells you, research it for yourself......
Type in the names I have provided and be amazed or you can type in the name Menachem Begin and look into the face of a terrorist turned statesmen.
All that is took for these terrorist groups to stop was a bit of land. But in giving them that land then they began to force others off that land and now we have Islamic terrorist instead of Jewish ones.
How do you end the war on terror, give peace a chance..........

When rockets are fired into Israel, it always makes the news, WillB. And you know that. Try to post honestly, if you can possibly help it.
Of course, this is probably another one of your classic hit-and-run posts where you spew utter nonsense, and when called on it, fade into the ether.
