Junta allows Suu Kyi to meet with lawyer again

YANGON —

Myanmar’s detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was allowed Sunday to meet with her lawyer for the second time in 10 days, according to diplomatic sources. The meeting between Suu Kyi and her lawyer, Kyi Win, at her Yangon house lasted over four hours, diplomats in Yangon said. It was not immediately known what they discussed. Suu Kyi and Kyi Win met on Aug. 8 for about two hours also at her residence.

At their meeting on Aug. 8, the first such meeting since 2003, Suu Kyi had asked Kyi Win about legal procedures relating to her extended house arrest, according to a spokesman of her National League for Democracy. In May, the junta extended Suu Kyi’s house arrest for another year, bringing her into a sixth consecutive year of detention. She was arrested in May 2003. The NLD appealed the move on grounds that the government can only place restrictions on her for five consecutive years under the relevant section of the law originally used to detain her, which deals with safeguarding the state from those desiring to engage in subversive acts. The junta, however, rejected the party’s appeal. It later published a commentary in state-run newspapers, saying it is necessary to continue her detention to safeguard national sovereignty and that the extension of her house arrest was made ‘‘in conformity with the law.’’ Sunday’s meeting took place a day ahead of the scheduled visit of U.N. special envoy to Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari, who will be visiting to promote national reconciliation and democratic reforms in the military-ruled country.

Myanmar's Suu Kyi, must follow buddha's mercies, humbleness and sucess. Suu Kyi should be a good buddhist and achieve sucess by coming out of politics.

Suu Kyi should become an good mentor for myanmar citizens, like Lee Kuan Yew/Jimmy carter/others. Even George bush will become a mentor for USA people ,by 75 days.

REMEMBER, Burma's Suu Kyi was not allowed to see her legal representative for 5 long years. There was no law suit, no formal charges, but just locked her up for 5 long years without a trial. Burma(Myanmar) is a country which signed "The UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights Charter", and yet the world can do nothing about the junta's violations for the last 46 years, due to CHINA's VETO at the UNSC. At this eve of Mr.Gambari's visit , it is merely an empty lie on the junta's part as usual. (Printing /distribution of the UN's U.D.HumanRights Charter will certainly put one into harsh prison terms in Burma.)

To rajakumar,,,,,Remember this, Suu Kyi has ALWAYS been a good Buddhist all her life. She is well known for her practice under Buddha's teachings of "BASIC FIVE PRECEPTS" such as Never kills , Never steal, Never takes alcohol or drugs, Never commits adultery, Never tell lies (infact, telling of the strict truth puts her into trouble with the junta); which are the conducts that Burmese generals break every day of the year and the world is the witness.

Who told you that a good Buddhist cannot become a good sucessful politician and leader of a nation?

Your knowledge in Burmese politics and in Buddhism is a disgrace.

Hello rajakumar !!! You have forgotten the most important fact here which is "Lee Kuan Yew had RULED and MANAGED S'pore as a leader for many years and achieved very highly before he retires. So did Jimmy Carter who lead the country as a president for a term. Also, Nelson Mendela was the opposition leader for decades and successfully led the country into an open democratic society and became president before he retires to take the back seat as a mentor...... But, Suu Kyi, for the last 20 years, never had any chance to lead her people into a "free democratic society which respects human rights"; instead she has been serving long term incarceration, illegally imposed by the Burmese generals for 12 long years. Why should she retire before she's done her duties and make Burma a better place for all of us to live in?

I'd like to see SuuKyi released. Maybe exiled. She would at least have more freedom. < :-)

adaydream- Agree with you. Suu Kyi should get more freedom and request exile.

She can teach more and do more in exile, than in Burma's one army party systems with no protest allowed in systems.

There is no need to follow mahatma gandhi systems in today's age.

She should get exile from Burmese leaders and do more via a interactive website ,make her own web site audio/audiovisual link.

    PaukPhawGyi- noted your views,thanks.

Jyan Bon- My knowledge of buddhism is a disgrace. So teach more about buddhism and buddha.

Buddha was political king's son from India, but he left politics to preach about faith/mercies.

    Is this not right.

There few JT readers posts on this topic.

Because this topics of Burma poltics, it is so complicated that few understand or willing to spend time to learn.

For your information, I do not speak Burmese language,I am not speaking in burmese language here.

I do not expect too know much about Burma as I do not speak burmese.

This topic is written in english, so I discuss what I can in english like others here.

Nowadays there's only you and PaukPhawGyi commenting on burma topics. What happen to many others.

There is only "ONE" country in the world where the illegal defacto military government (which killed tens of thousands of peaceful citizens), REFUSES BLUNTLY to negotiate politically with the "Legally Elected" political party and the unarmed ethnic leaders. The overwhelmingly elected party lead by Suu Kyi practices only non-violent campaign. With the help of the world community, Suu Kyi's party urges the junta for national reconciliation with a time frame but failed every time. May be the junta does not deserve a "gental persuation" in the first place. We should look for other options such as 'A STICK' .
