Lt Gen Henry Obering III said in Washington. “I think it is time that we ask the Russians to justify why they are taking a stance that internationally is so unreasonable.”

That's a dumbass question. Remember those missiles on Cuba almost 60 years ago?

I'm not justifing them, but they feel the same about the U. S. missiles system in Europe as we felt about Russia's in Cuba.

Oh..oh I can feel the republicans starting to get restless..... < :-)

The missiles of Cuba were surface to surface and had atomic warheads. They were capable of killing millions of people. These missiles have conventional warheads and are surface to air/space and defensive only. I think the Russians are looking for an excuse to restart the cold war. They need to be able to threaten others to ensure their foreign policy.

Big deal, splitting hairs. They are still missiles.

    That's what they are today....

It's just a rouse till they get in. < :-)

    YuriOtani,

Yes, that's true. However, the US missiles already deployed in Turkey were a quarter of an hour away from Moscow. As I understand it the deployment of Soviet nuclear weapons in Cuba was cancelled only as a result of the quid-pro-quo of removal of our missiles from Turkey.

It's easy to see how countries get nervous with missiles or anti-missile systems on their borders. In Russia's case, they have little choice but to view US moves with suspicion. Gorbachev was promised that the US would not seek to expand NATO into former Soviet satellite countries. Whatever happened to that? And why, after 8 years of adventurous war and the Bush pre-emption doctrine, should the Russians trust us now?

Well if you would have just come out and said this in the beginning we could have written you off ages ago. Why wait so long?

The Russians already have the same type of missile deployed near their borders. However these are tipped with nuclear warheads. They are surface to air/space. I think there are 100 of these missiles (A135 type using the Gorgon and Gazelle missiles. SezWho2, the missiles of Turkey were removed over 40 years ago and have no bearing on this discussion. adaadream, not all missiles are the same, some are defensive only. These stationed in Poland would not be able to target aircraft over Russia and there are only 10 of them. If Russia would target missiles on a NATO country, NATO and the Americans would have to target these missiles. This will lead to a new cold war.
