Hooray! As a Canadian this will return Canada to its open ways, a return of science over religion and ideology, as much hope in a moment. We are no longer in the dark times of the Harper Empire!

It never fails to repeat itself, history in Canadian politics. How quickly Canadian voters forget hot the Liberals crushed Canada with debt, drain their Canadian Pension Plan and raided the Unemployment coffers to 'balance the budget. People in Canada were freaking out about how Harper wrecked Canada but can't really tell you how it affected them directly. From the outside we can see that Harper lowered the GST by 2% and while it was the 'old PC party' that made the GST 7% back in 1991, the Liberals that fought against the GST in 1991 did NOTHING to remove it or even lower it when the came into power in 1993 all the way through to 2006 when the lost to Harper. Yeah, Harper also lowered income tax to the middle and low income as well. People bitch about taxes and then claim that free health care is suffering. GRAB A CLUE, how can you have 'FREE HEALTH CARE?!? Doctors go to school for free, hospitals and the land they are on are free, nurses, lab techs, beds, medical equipment, etc., etc., etc.? Taxes pay for so called free healthcare but they quickly forget that they paid high taxes and blamed Harper for the world meltdown of 2008 when Canada fared as best as one could and was near the top of the G8 for weathering the storm out.

Time will tell but if history is any indication, Canadians will pay dearly for their 'free healthcare' and social programmes. Trudeau will spend, spend, spend and when the spending binge ends and the payment statements arrive, it will be all excuses about how they will climb out of that debt hole and you can be sure they will blame Harper and company for the worldly events that Canada was attempting to ride out when the Liberals went to town on a spending spree.

So, what happened with the lawsuit against the Central Bank of Canada? I know they won but haven't heard anything since. Was restoring Canada's central bank back to its original purpose (interest free loans to local-federal governments) ever part of the campaign topic?

At least nobody has insinuated that either of the candidates were born in Africa or ally themselves with sinister religious cults.

This guy looks too young and inexperienced. Canada has already been in the recession. A good old days of selling commodities to China with huge profits are over. China economy is in the transition from resources hungry fixed assets investments into consumers demand driven economy. Therefore Canada export revenue will be weak for sometimes.

Whether the public like it or not, Canada needs painful economic reform such as spending cut, Austerity measure and sustainable innovation for export and competitive wages. Canada will become another Greece if the new Government spends and borrows like no more tomorrows. Hope he should be replaced by another wiser, thoughtful and competent leader in the future.

It's almost always the economy as first priority. Since Canada entered recession early this year under the Conservative administration, citizens would want a change.

This was clearly an anti-austerity vote. The usually progressive party, the NDP, tried to cozy up too much to the centre when the population was seeking a stronger move away from the inequality of neoliberalism and the Liberals captured the voter sentiment. Unfortunately, again only one Green party member was elected, so many people who might otherwise have been inclined to express their concern about climate change voted strategically this time, choosing the lesser evil of the two big business friendly parties.

Do you suggest this because in the US the government is in the back pocket of the corporate and investing class, and this leads to policy that furthers the huge inequity and other social ills there?

Canada will now change the flag from a Maple leaf to a cannabis leaf with the legalization of marijuana being proposed by a guy whose back ground past includes work as a snowboard instructor, a bartender and a bouncer. Perhaps did they omit past smoker. I agree the long contest gave him time to sharpen his campaign skills, but the question is the Canadians willing to wait for this new leader to make good on his promises. Ex. Raise taxes on the rich and lower them for the middle class and legalize marijuana!! I am willing to bet the legalization of marijuana get done but the promises of raising taxes on the rich and lowering them for the middle class, its not going to happen. I think he better light one up now!!

Sad day for Canada. Now I hope Trump become president. In 4 years, the Conservatices will make a come back and will have again to deal with all the liberal's mess and corruption.

I'm looking forward to seeing it! The Mexican Supreme Court will be making a decision regarding legalization at the end of this month. With the political tide turning in America, as well, depending on what happens in next year's election, 2015-2016 could be a serious turning point in the struggle for cannabis legalization.

If the federal liberal is anywhere close to the Ontario provincial one, you can say good bye to the credit ratings. Massive debt, lies (well all politicians lie anyway but Ontario liberal takes the cake), everything will cost more and probably put more "revenue tools" - another fancy name for tax. Perhaps, may even impose breathing tax for all living Canadian and sleeping tax for those 6 feet under.

Anyway, we will see. It will be fun to see how he deal with Putin as he is very green. Even Obama is useless against Putin. He will probably be steamed rolled over by Putin.

Too bad the lefties fell apart in the end. Still, a centrist Canadian party is pretty left from an American standpoint.

On the Liberal platform was a promise in 18 months to form a committee on electoral reform to end First Past the Post and replace it with Proportional Representation. If that were to happen the odds of another Conservative victory ever again will end. They had been in power for 10 years largely on the split vote of the centre-left. Liberals were able to unify the shattered centre-left into a single cause to oust Harper, and the result was no contest. With Conservative governments as a possibility about to end, we may get the Canada a majority of Canadians want rather than just some. It'll be interesting to see how this goes and if it results in any parties left or right folding.

I hope he works to get that law that makes it illegal to be abroad and suggest who Canadians should vote for appealed. Talk about a clear violation of free speech! Its also makes Canada look ridiculous on the international stage.

I was in Canada recently and watched with amazement how the media, in effect, were campaigning for this guy non-stop. Every report on just about about every issue was tilted in favour of his party talking points.

Case in point, the refugees.... Canada simply must show their goodness by inviting 60,000 and more Middle Easterners, but no mention of the social costs associated with it. Even in back to back reporting from Germany, nobody questioned the wisdom of this.

Also, now that he has declared he will replace bombing missions against ISIS with "humanitarian aid", I am curious who will receive this aid. ISIS? Al Nusra? The media never asks.
