$400 million on Wednesday to support Mexico’s police and soldiers" Don't they know that the police and the Army are the problem?

If people stop taking drugs to get high,we can end afghan war via drug money loss. The money from opium trade is being used to fund their weapons.
Doping and getting high, should be controlled in Americas.
America and Latin america can be better place if they take less drugs and people live with reality.
Reality is something all people have to face but using drugs just postpones realisation of reality and need to overcome the real problems.
Drugs pollute minds of people and reduces our intelligence, and does not really help any nation in Americas ,even holy afghanistan in its opium trade and wars.

"...worry they’ll be handcuffed by concerns about human rights and corruption once Barack Obama is president."
Soooo... maybe if you're less corrupt they'll be nothing to worry about?

Have any of you really been following news in Mexico? Have any of you been following news on what is happening in border cities?
In order to achieve raja's goal of people to stop taking drugs, we would need a law such a Japan's which many may find too strict and we would have to truly enforce border control, as at the moment most drugs are coming from Latin America thus the point of the article, which a great many feel that is both racist and xenophobic thus neither is going to happen.
People just can't simply stop taking drugs once they have been hooked and drug dealers have been known to retaliate against "good" customers. Face it, we are stuck with it and politicians are starting to show favor in preventing law enforcement from ridding cities of those who are known to kill to support the drug trade.

Hey I don't want to drink alcohol, get cirrhosis of the liver and/or cancer to get my high.
I want to smoke my pot and stay at home after work and bother nobody.
It makes so much more sence to do the latter.
So I say legalize it and quit paying Mexico to stop something that should be legal. < :-)

So I say legalize it and quit paying Mexico to stop something that should be legal." Its really the only alternative.
Additionally, I had always thought weed should be legal and alcohol illegal. Never seen anyone go on a temper tantrum after smoking weed, but for the juice I think we all know that story.

skip: "Additionally, I had always thought weed should be legal and alcohol illegal."
I agree 100%, however it'll never happen in our lifetime, and would even then take some cataclysmic shift in the human psyche to do it. And when banned, we'd probably see a switch to bootlegging and illegal sales of moonshine, whiskey, beer, etc., the likes of which hasn't been seen since... well, the abolition.
As for weed, I don't care for it, but I too have never known anyone to go berserk on it like they do when drunk.

skipthesong,
I think at the very least the US should make ganja legal for personal use and it should control the sale. Prices would plummet and the taxation would be useful.
The stated problem has always been that ganja is a gateway drug. That strikes me as ridiculous. What is beer?
The real problem is one of how to make sure that your 747 pilot isn't stoned. But I'm sure that if we can develop safeguards to make sure he isn't drunk, we should be able to develop some kind of test to make sure he isn't too mellow.
Of course, as Woody Allen's character said in "Annie Hall":

And when banned, we'd probably see a switch to bootlegging and illegal sales of moonshine" You know, in regards to raja's post, he's right. What is it with people in constantly looking for an alternative high? What about sex? opps, I forgot, people go to illegal ends to do that as well.. We're screwed.
The stated problem has always been that ganja is a gateway drug. That strikes me as ridiculous. What is beer?" I have had the same question and one further, what about cigarettes?

Most of the politicians making the laws are religious freaks who would rather do their own corrupt things behind closed doors (and preach to everyone else) and now they will support the push for this $400 million, which is probably thanks to drug money anyway, to try and get the problem cleared up. That won`t happen either. The drug lords and the desire for drugs will continue indefinately. People want to get high. Bottom line. Just legalise it and get on with other more important issues. I do worry about the hard stuff getting around though...

So, how much more money do you think we can throw down the well? You would think the people living down there would have had enough by now.
Good thoughts here. Legalizing mary jane would go a long way to fighting the drug lords. But that would mean no helicopter sale to Mexico, and some fat cat would have find another way to make money, so its not going to happen.

The USA has a huge responsibility for this violent mess south of the border. Poor Mexicans are killing each other to try to keep up with the US demand for marijuana, cocaine, heroine, amphetamines etc..Before Mexican President Calderon there was Vicente Fox who had a very good idea that scarde the crap out of George W! Hey, how about if we just LEGALIZE ALL THE DRUGS IN MEXICO! Yes, amigos, just do like the DUTCH! George got a bit more serious about trying to help the Mexican government fight the narco terrorists.

Maybe if Mexico would clean up its act and not make drug killing such a good alternative for young men then the problem would be helped to a large extent.
Nah.

Latin America was also made to feel a little uncomfortable over larry craig's stance in fighting drug trade, described as "wide."

It's easy to say that the U.S. should 'clean up its act', but it's not the addict that is to blame, but rather the dealer, and they're in cahoots with, if not directly linked to the cartels/suppiers. Blame still lies more in the back yards of these suppliers. Build your (Columbian, Mexican) economies to support something other than poverty, discontent and the illegal drug trade.
