This is highly encouraging to see. Certainly there have been a number of concerns raised around Khan's background but it is positive to see this sort of thing.

Who cares who he is or where he is from, if he does the right thing in running a global leading city with the UK proud then he is a good man.

Who cares who he is or where he is from

Who he is is of course relevant since he is a public figure who will now lead one of the major cities of the world. But I don't see any mention of where he is from.

if he does the right thing in running a global leading city with the UK proud then he is a good man.

I agree.

The UK Labour Party is not an antisemitic party. Dont believe the Conservative-spun British press. Two idiot members have made idiotic comments and were swiftly dealt with by the Labour Party. Livingstone was immediately taken to task by a member of his own party after his stupid comment. I didnt see any concerned Conservatives until after it hit the press.

Remember. The British Labour Party has always represented minorities and the working class and its membership reflects this. As opposed to the white privileged membership of the Conservative party.

And also remember. The previous leader of the Labour Party was Jewish.

If Khan really does want to represent all of London's people, then I wish him all the best. America could learn a thing or two from this. What I worry is his supporting of the the Jewish community and same sex marriage will bring (more) death threats to him.

@Pukey2

Khan has taken some pretty brave positions. I remember reading an excellent piece by Mehdi Hasan, a leading Muslim journalist, who wrote about widespread anti-Semitism, including holocaust denial, among Muslims in the UK. As you said, he will be a target for religious knuckle-draggers. One Muslim cleric in London received death threats for saying he accepted the theory of evolution. It doesn't take much for some to start rattling their cages.

Khan seems to be a decent man. A far better choice than the Tory sewer-dweller he hammered in the election.

newly elected Muslim mayor... received a hero’s welcome from London’s Jewish community

The amazingly vibrant tapestry that is London finally has the representation it deserves.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has established an independent inquiry into the extent of anti-Semitic views within party ranks.

Garbage spun by the Israeli regime: critics are either anti-Semitic or self-hating Jews. Kudos to the Israeli army's deputy chief of staff:

Maj-Gen Yair Golan said on the eve of Thursday's annual Holocaust Day that he detected trends in Israeli society suggestive of "nauseating processes" that occurred in 1930s Nazi Germany.

As a Londoner im going to watch this with much interest. But like MarkGMays comment

"Who cares who he is or where he is from, if he does the right thing in running a global leading city with the UK proud then he is a good man." just cos he is a Muslim and born with a plastic spoon in he mouth apposed to the silver one of Boris's, doesnt mean a lot, lets wait and see.....

The Labour Party has just "adopted a critical line on Israel."? That's an understatement considering the recent resignations & verbiage coming forth from some of the Labour leaders. Good to see the new mayor make this appearance & hopefully he can represent a fair & just leadership for the ppl in London.

Forget about the man's religion and put his credentials and potential on the top.

Haj Amin el-Husseini, the former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, would be turning over in his grave on hearing this news!

His religion is important in that he is the first observant Muslim to be elected to a prominent position in any Western Nation. So, if anything, it is a noteworthy milestone for the the religious tolerance and pluralism we expect in a liberal democracy.

Said another way, can you imagine a practicing Christian being elected mayor of Cairo? or even Turkey for that matter?

"Forget about the man's religion..."

That isn't easy to do. Religion is not a race or ethnicity, which is how many (shallow-thinking) people are treating this case.

Religion is a set of beliefs, akin to an ideology, a lens through which followers encouraged to view the world. It would be like saying, "Who cares about political leader X's beliefs? What does that have to do with anything?"
