The 'loser' is now the most popular politician in the UK as a result. Taking a stand like this means UKIP votes back in his pocket, along with Eurosceptic Labour voters. His stand will be be a key election plank that will see him with a Conservative majority and a step closer to EU withdrawal.

Cameron spat his dummy out in order to look tough and stop the Tories losing votes to UKIP. The 'fruitcakes' are now dictating Tory policy on Europe. He achieved nothing apart from irritating the rest of Europe and throwing a few scraps to the Daily Mail reading UKIP balloon heads. That's not how you do business.
