It's a tough call.
Do you ban a pilot who had depression six years ago but has shown stability and has taken medication since then or do you ban any and all pilots who have had mental issues?
If you do ban pilots with any mental issues, how many in the world would be removed from their planes today?

Good question, all. And on a related note, I have a feeling this video is fake, fake, fake.
Kabukilover
He tore up a note from a doctor saying he was too sick to fly.
papigiulio
The video is allegedly fake. Taken on board Airbus AA280 from American Airlines that suffered heavy turbulence somewhere above Japan in December 2014.
I could post the link but its all in Dutch!

Spohr then read out a statement to reporters, but refused to answer a torrent of questions.
There are “no words to describe how terrible this accident is,” he said, > He's right about how terrible this is but as far as it being an accident, I am not sure. If they knew this guy had serious problems and just looked the other way, it sounds like they were seriously negligent. That means this 'accident' was wholly preventable and could have or should have been foreseen.

Mental illness can develope....it's not either you have it or not. It's almost impossible to prevent this sort of thing. One possible solution, the media never prints or utters the name of the would be famouse nut job. The media calls the name sick demented individual. Maybe they prefer not to have that fame.

Of course people who have or have gone through serious depression should not fly passenger aircraft. It is just too risky. Why is that even being questioned? I admire people who are trying to become more normal mentally, but that does not mean they should fly passenger aircraft.
Wakarimasen
all the press being holier than thou in deciding not to publish the video - although describing the contents in graphic detail. can't be long before it makes its way onto social media.

Germany, the German doctors, Lufthansa, the flight attendant (ex girlfriend of the idiot suicidal nut case should have also been able to warn the airlines etc..that this guy should not have been flying planes.)

I do not believe the video is real. And neither do I believe the story about the pilot using an axe to attack the door. Come one, in these days of nailclippers being confiscated before boarding, they now tell us there is a friggin AXE on board??
FizzBit
FAA rules require a "crash axe" for large planes.
Elbuda Mexicano
Ax or axe, not too sure but anyway, if the pilots do have one, for emergencies, it does sound quite plausible. RIP poor, innocent passengers on that doomed flight (no, not the Malaysian ones, but this German Wings one)
