"Racial tension" in Malaysia is a euphemism for islamism. The Malay popoulation with its mandatory islam and Shariah courts is dominating the Chinese and Indian populations who are doing better economically but are have inferior status to the dominant muslims -- as the Koran demands. So, when they get uppity, they cracked on. And in our press, that is labelled as "racial tension".

Many things now explained here about these crackdowns. There has been a poltician(ahmad ibrahim) in Penang state from Barisan ruling party in malaysia who called chinese malaysians as immigrants who are new immigrant people coming into malaysia.
His statements has lead to strained ties between Chinese parties in Penang with Malay poltical parties in penang,Malaysia.
This also led to protests by Malaysian Opposition parties led Pakatan. There has a lot issues being raised by the remarks which has lead to 3 years suspension of ahmad ibrahim by ruling coalition.
The government's home minister ordered arrests of 1 journalist(Sin Chew Jit Poh newspaper), Teresa Kok(MP in kuala Lumpur) and Raja petra kamaruddion (No holds barred website malaysia-today.com). Journalist has been released today and is at home.
Politics in malaysia is very long story, which never ends. Will try to explain more, hope many other JT reader can expand on the discussions here.
Racial ethnic ties was strained in worst position via racial tensions in 1969 race riots in Kuala Lumpur 50 years ago, which led to deaths of 196 malaysian in May/July 1969 ,which were times low economic progress in Malaysia.
The government is always very careful with racial tensions creating issues in Malaysia since 1969 incidents. Racial ties faces trials and tensions in multiracial and multi ethnic nation like Malaysia. There is need to have very sophisticated governence and leaders in place in malaysia more than ever, just like in many other nations too facing other ethnic issues/woes.
Malaysians have risen up the economic ladder to be 29th richest nation in world with just a population of 27.5 million malaysians. This economic sucess in malaysia today is far cry, from backward appalling economic conditions and strive back in year 1969. That is not to say we do not have problems in 2008,which are very different in nature and in very different economic conditions, where rich get very rich and others gets left behind, like in USA.

Raja petra and teresa kok still under ISA. The Internal security act comes from British ruled Malaysia. It was used to detain pro-communist party members in Malaya(former name of malaysia) without legal charges in court of law in time of emergency in malaysia in 1950s. ISA laws can detain people via home affairs minister of the cabinet.
In 1987, 100 MPs of parliament were held under ISA laws. Malaysian parliament is ruled 222 MPs. The ruling majority party picks the PM,Home minsters and other ministers, all from their support coalition parties. Racial and ethnic woes is a big problem in Malaysia that needs MPs of calibre to bring in sophisticated governance for excellence in governance.
The Internal security act is british law invention with all its english law precedents and time immemorial laws. Sophisticated governance systems from britain is yet to fully understood by normal citizen. The complex system of english laws translated into malaysian law in rarely understood by citizens of malaysia.
Malaysians need to upgrade the approaches in making systems better for ISA acts. May be the parliament MPs should enact new laws to make the ISA act better for malaysians. Malaysians PMs and ministers now have full power to use Internal security acts as they choose.
Just like in USA/UK, the buck stops at Prime minister or president, who is the chief commanding officer.
Malaysia is not in 1960s, in today 2000s many malaysian now demanding more than what they did in past, when demands of citizens was more via just one paper and one TV/radio station.
Today malaysian demand comes via numerous channels of mobile phones, TV,radio, satellite TV ,web radio, web TV and websites. It is ongoing evolution of politics in Malaysia.
Things are improving, in 1960 we had civil war,1970s-1980s we have 100s of ISA arrests. Today in 2008 we have just 2 MPs, 1 website operator and another 4 political opposition party members under ISA. There is more media objections than ever before in 2008.
Many former ISA detainess now hold high political positions with big incomes, after being released out of ISA detainess prisons. We can expect all ISA detainees to become MPs if they run for office in next elections. Even former PM Dr Mahathir was imprisoned during his early years before becoming PM for his book titled "Malay dilemma".

It's not just religion, it's ethnicity and the bumpatera way of doing things in Malaysia that is driving it apart. Tomorrow, the 16th Anwar is supposed to make a move for power, if he succeeds, maybe he'll put the coutry on a new course. www.theendisalwaysnear.blogspot.com

Malaysia and malaysians are not perfect they have their weakness and strengths. All ethnic have weakness and strengths. Blaming malay ethnic and any other ethnic political party is not a way out of woes in Malaysian political betterment.
There is need for malaysian 222 MPs to really tackle woes affecting all their constituencies. Malaysians, malaysian press and 222 MPs should tackle the real problems affecting malaysians.
The press and people are are just blinded and side tracked. They are not doing nothing really good for national unity.
In fact there are dividing and ruling their own ethnic majority constituencies needs rather than needs of nation and malaysians. The whole issues just side tracks the nation unity way to solve ethnic woes of various different languages and cultures. Malaysian culture is not one single culture and language like japan in unity. It is very complex various ethnic governance systems.
Malaysians should practise patience and be glad with thought that all ISA detained malaysians have and get much in political ,economic power on release. ISA detainess are treated with much honour in detentions.
Detained MPs under ISA should be patient in seeeking more clout for their constituency higher ethnic majority ,be it malay, indian or chinese. Rome/London was not build in a day. We are just a 5 decades old systems of governance that is evolving. Malaysian people must must be more patient to build all the Romes/Londons they want in Malaysia.
Political parties drive malaysian apart not malaysians or malay malaysians . Political parties and 222 MPs must unite as one malaysia to bring much needed betterment. The democratic systems and political parties systems are using crooked ways more than excellent ways to build the better malaysia.
