This is not news. But at least nobody is being killed over it... A nice sign of improved religious freedom in an Islamic ruled government.

    Er... actually it is news.

No 1. All people were free to refer to a Supreme Being as Allah or God.

No 2. The government banned the used of 'Allah' by anyone except Muslims.

No 3. The High Court struck this down on Thursday, 1st Jan, 2010 (not reported by JT) and said anyone can use the word.

No. 3 above is the news, although such is not clear in the article above, and it is a rare display of common sense.

Unfortunately the government has now reacted pettily to No 3., by announcing they will appeal this latest ruling.

Obviously the Malaysian islamic government disagrees with the often-heard claim that Muslims and Christians worship the same god.

The Islamic Government of Malaysia is committing blasphemy then.

There is no God but Allah/God. There is only one. There cannot be two.

I cannot understand why Malaysian Christians would want to refer to God as "Allah." The title "Allah" is Muslim, and has no connection to the God of the Bible, either in name or personality. The God of the Bible is the Creator of the Universe, through His Son, Jesus Christ, who is One with God. That is what Christians believe. Muslims and Christians do not worship the same God.

This is why it's funny to watch idiots and extremists fight about religion and both claim they are correct.

    Yes they do.

Maybe one might do more research next before starting a holy war?

Is that why you always claim I'm an extremist Richard? It's funny to watch us claim we are both correct. Yes it can be fun to watch extremists and idiots. I agree with you on that one.

I'm afraid trademarks on the names given to gods weren't protected vigorously enough and have become generic over millennia --hence anyone can use them for any purpose without fear of infringing. For example I can come up with a new toothpaste and call it "Zeus toothpaste" and be in the clear.

Well this does go to show how ridiculously close minded some religious fundamentalists can be. To be honest the main reason the christians want to use allah in their text is to t"identify" with and win over converts from muslims specifically, which of course leads to the other problem where Malay Islamic rule doesn't tolerate conversion from Islamic beliefs.

Christians can become muslim, Hindi can become muslim, Bhuddist can become muslim, but muslim can never become something else as far as the fundamentalists are concerned. allah and the christian/jewish god are actually quite different. Totally different origins. Kind of like asking a Greek to believe in an Aztec god if you go back far enough.

Arab christians were using the were allah long before Islam came about, same is true with arabic speaking jews. The word allah is nothing more then the arabic word for god, it doesn't refer to any one god and only that god, it just means god or gods if you will. Also Muslims and christians believe in the same god, your ignorance is astounding.

If they did, then why are they so resistant to muslims becoming christian or jewish? Jews don't bother about becoming christian and vice versa. No laws saying, "If you leave the faith, you should die."

The single most absolute issue with islam is the fact that people are pretty much forced into it from birth, or if they convert to it they're pressured to never leave or they will be persecuted or worse.

HonestDictator, read the Bible and the Quran and you will see quite clearly that they both describe the same Supreme Being. The same holy spots are revered. Semitic peoples trace their lineage back to one of Abraham's children and Abraham is the patriarch of the Jews, the Muslims and the Christians. How could Abraham have worshipped two different gods?

A true believer believes in that one Being, and the Quran specifically states that Allah forbids the killing of a true believer, whether Jewish or Christian. This is where the Islamic fundamentalists are making a grave mistake.

'Al-lah' literally means 'The God'. An unlimited all-encompassing Being. There cannot by definition be two of these. There can only be one, (or none in the case of an 'unbeliever').

The differences come in the words used and in the cultural and religious practices of the peoples. This is why even different sects of Islam can fight against each other. They have forgotten their roots, lost their focus on the divine, and turned against the one thing that should matter most.
