    Madverts:

Sharing facts about Malaysia is not "hate". Go find another reason to kneejerk.

Being muslim is freedom to disrespect individual rights and destroy other religion's symbols. Man they should get some edjucatin from the Taliban but don't let the women get any of that edjucatin though. That would be almost respecting their personal choice and that is not allowed in today's modern muslim world.

i think the person who founded any religion has his own selfish reason as basis for its law. I am glad that the person who interpreted and propagated Christianity likes to have a a few pork, a little wine, and a good sense of fairness in terms of platonic socializing with women. Otherwise, I will end up with no pork, no wine and and cannot have innocent socializing with the opposite sex.

Caning is terrible - you can find caning videos on the internet and photos. We're talking about taking the flesh off the buttocks making it difficult to sleep, go to the toilet, and impossible to sit down for many weeks.

    Cadmium, "*We're talking about..." *

No we are not. There are two types of caning, according to the links provided by one poster above. One is for straight criminals and is as you describe. The other is Syaria (Sharia?) caning and is carried out gently with a limp wrist, if we can believe the interview with the caner.

And this is a moderate Muslim country...can't imagine what goes on else where

    Who told on her?

Is this really that much different than the intolerance many westerners show towards those who smoke pot? They too receive ridiculous sentences, often much worse than a canning. I would rather take six whacks with a cane than head to prison where I will be de-scaled like the fish I'd be for six months. Barbarians everywhere. Even in Japan, where you will lose your frikking employment for toking on a bloody weed. My goodness.

    I hate religion.

WilliB, you have my sympathy. It's a sad day when simply stating facts is considered to be "screeching hate". Really sad. And some of us can see it. The level of ignorance of the FACTS concerning Islam is astounding.

Caning someone for having a beer is absolutely ridiculous no matter what religion he or she is. Eventually religions that try to control what you can eat or drink will fade out....as they seem to be fading out these days anyway. Of course the first ones that spring to mind are Islam and Judaism but Christianity also hopes their believers don't eat meat on Sunday, right? Also the idea that someone is born a Muslim or born a Christian is absurd. People need to decide for themselves as they grow up. Back to the topic of this article, it just makes many of us realize how lucky we are.

Caning someone for having a beer is absolutely ridiculous no matter what religion he or she is.

So I have a few questions...maybe someone knows. I wonder what kind of beer it was (Bud? Kirin? Something Malaysian?), and does this mean that there were no other Muslims in the nightclub? And then, is it okay for a Muslim in Malaysia to serve beer if one isn't drinking it? Can a Muslim make beer if one doesn't drink it?

  • nandakandamanda at 11:51 AM JST - 26th July

Farmboy, I think you need to ask your local Mullah some of those questions about Muslims, alcohol and Malaysian law.

I have a bunch of friends in the UK and when we go to a bar or club the Muslims among us drink soft drinks, but they ask me what I want to drink and seem to take real delight in watching me down a G&T for example. LOL

    Nandakandamanda,

Yes, it's interesting how people juggle their interactions within and outside of their religions, and whether they believe the rules that come with the religions are personal, or universal.
