The suspect was known to officers, ....who disrupted the House chamber last fall by shouting.

Yeah, shouting "I am a Prophet of God!"

Then, he sent a this letter to the authorities:

I am Larry R. Dawson, a Minister and Rue Prophet of GOd. I have been called chosen and sent unto You this day. I am not under the Law."

IOW A Christian Terrorist.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines terrorism as “the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.”

This handgun wielding man was a terrorist according to this definition.

To me any extremist belief is a form of mental illness, especially religious extremism. I'll throw in come-and-take-it-ism as a form of mental illness. The problem seems to be particularly acute in places where firearms and religion too often go handgun (or assault rifle) in hand. I'm happy I live in Japan.

That is a common and soothingly false misconception.

At its core there may actually be some degree of truth to it. But ironically taking it to its extreme not only makes the claim false, but it makes it subject to the scrutiny of its own claim. Congratulations, the serpent is eating its own tail.

I'd like to ask a question---god (no pun intended) knows that if the shooter was a Muslim then my question would be considered bigoted and/or racist---but luckily he's a white-American religious nut from the South so he gets no social protection from the media so I can: Isn't it time we start to consider the fact that people who talk to and hear things from non-existent beings are not mentally sound? I understand the freedom of religion but a person talking to "god" is prayer but "god" talking to a person is mental illness. If you need to security of invisible people living in the sky to get through the day, fine, knock yourself out, but I want an end to the millionaire preachers who pay nothing in taxes and religious organizations that influence elections and social policy but are not held to the rules and regulations that others must adhere to. Case in point; the state of Michigan wants capital punishment but cannot get it passed because the Catholic Bishops Association stirs up their congregations to protest even the possibility of a vote. Now Michigan residents must pay taxes to the tune of US$31,500 per inmate per year. Of course, the Church is exempt from contributing any money. Look, virgins don't give birth to children, the dead don't come back to life and people don't walk across water. Whether or not you eat pork, travel to Mecca or wear a little beanie-thing-cap on your head matters to nobody other than yourself. If it gets you through the day, great, but leave the rest of us rational people out of it.

Good on the police.

It's a good job this guy wasn't a muslim, otherwise this would have been a terrorist attack.

I didn't see anything about what color he is, so it may still be deemed a terrorist attack if he's not white.

Welcome to America. Enjoy the nature and always find a place to take cover.

So then what was the political or social objective? And who was he trying to coerce?

Ah well, at least nobody is dead. Makes a change from your usual nut with gun(s)...

Right. The phrases "shelter in place" and "lockdown" are now taught in elementary school. Try explaining those to your Japanese students; the concepts are simple enough, but the reasons behind their need are horrific and embarrassing.

Surprised he wasn't killed. Remember what happened to the guy who occupied the Washington Monument with hostages and tried to drive away (without any of the hostages if memory serves correct)? He was shot in the head by the FBI as just he was driving away from the monument.

You (intentionally?) left out a very important piece of information. On December 9, 1982, anti-nuclear war protester Norman D. Mayer (66) held police at bay and the hostages in the monument by claiming his van - which he had driven up to the side of the monument - was packed with explosives. Once he got back into the van and tried to drive away, his fate was sealed. Authorities are not going to let a potential rolling bomb hit the streets. It was subsequently revealed that his claim of a bomb was a bluff, but nobody in the city blamed law enforcement for taking Mayer at his word.

So then what was the political or social objective? And who was he trying to coerce?

His objective last fall when he interrupted the House by shouting "I am the Prophet of God!" was to raise the minimum wage.

Actually less crazy than the goals a lot of jihadi and KKK terrorists.

He hasn't given any motive for re-appearing at the Capitol after failing to show at his November hearing and in January sending the letter Black Sabbath referenced in his first comment. Regardless of his motive, he had been barred from the vicinity of the U.S. Capitol pending his trial, so he was there illegally even without pulling a gun.

IOW A Christian Terrorist.

How can you tell that from this article? It doesn't state who his god is. Maybe his god is Elmo from Sesame Street

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The article doesn't. I provided a link that does.

Gee, I wonder why the article doesn't...

Welp pulling a gun on police not the smartest thing to do.
