    Humongous

America is mostly just trying to make a buck off of military hardware. But the Russians have a point. If they don't have this also, they are screwed. If they get attacked, they won't be able to hit back. Its the same reason why bullet proof vests are not available at Kmart. Because if gunmen are wearing them they will be hard for law enforcement to stop.

And even if America offered to sell, they should not be forced to buy. That would be blackmail.

When you are dealing with the arrogances you have got to have a bargaining chip on hand otherwise you will be snubbed! Russia and China were good ally serving counterweights to keep world peace and made sure war shall never happens within their influences, Russia and China has ballistic missiles ready to use aiming at eastern europe and Taiwan as certain knwoledges of 'response' when their concerns were 'ignored'!

Nonsense. How is one ABM site supposed to take out Russia's thousands of nuclear weapons? Never mind that nuclear submarines make the entire idea ridiculous.

    What goes around, comes around.

Good to see the U.S. govt. finally seeing this.

Russia is threatening to break the new Start treaty which shows the value of a treaty with Russia, NONE. Think it is suppose to be 10 interceptors or was it 50. Anyhow I read the European system is in doubt because of a lack of money. Japan should take not of this and stop talking with Russia. Their agreements are worthless, as seen by the threatening of the Russians to break agreement for domestic politics.

Somebody got played. But I have an idea. We need to send Hillary Clinton to Russia, with a device of some kind that has a cute little red button on it with the word "reset" spelled out in Russian so that they know Bush is gone and history begins with Obama.

Could you please copy the article into a Word document, replace words "US" with "Russia" and "Russia" with "US" and read it again?

Cause I wounder what would you say if Russia were building a missile defense systems in Europe becoming an unreachable superpower. I bet you would be first screaming for breaking START treaty and launching everything to Moscow like immediately to stop those bastards, wouldn't you?

    YuriOtani

JonnyM, Russia has a lot more ICBM's than the US has anti ballistic missiles. The Start treaty has nothing to do with a few ABM's. Sure Russia can launch "everything", even a surprised launch will not destroy enough. Dude the launchers in Europe are not enough and as I wrote may never be deployed due to a lack of money. Russia is pulling on the nuclear trigger for internal politics.

While Russia is issuing a lot of bombast and talk of coming closer to 'all-out nuclear war' of late, they have a point. I sincerely think this is just more of the same US government in collusion with arms makers/dealers trying to make massive profit, you can't go around selling to nations all around Russia without making Russia wary in return. Nor should the US really be surprised by the response.

Deplore: "Nonsense. How is one ABM site supposed to take out Russia's thousands of nuclear weapons? Never mind that nuclear submarines make the entire idea ridiculous."

Agreed. So then what's the point of the missile shield at all? (aside from making money)

Ladies.....ladies. We've got no beef with our Russian friends. No, no...Cold War...it is ovaaer. No WWIII both nations blowing each other to smithereens. We know there can be no winner in nuclear conflict. Everybody loses. Even Russian people will turn on their leaders if they commit genocide.

The world is not in a complete state of darkness.

This is business. Nobody knows if it will work or not. The whole point of the system is NOT to use it. America is just selling pink elephants. They are willing to buy it....okay we'll sell it.

If they don't buy from us....they buy from someone else. You need not worry.

The US claim that the defense shield is intended for Iran is ridiculous. Any fool with a map can see that.

And they also expect us to believe that the strategists at the Pentagon can't sleep at night because they're worried about Polish cities being hit by Iranian missles.

The US should at least be honest and not speak to the world as if we're all fools.

SmithinJapan - "Agreed. So then what's the point of the missile shield at all? (aside from making money)"

Didn't you get the memo - America wants a missile shield to keep "rogue" Iranian missiles out of Europe? :-)

I believe that's also why the U.S. is basing forces in Australia as we speak. (ah-hem!)

Amazingly, it all makes sense if you think it's nonsense. :-)

NeverSubmit - "Any fool with a map can see that."

LOL! Quote of the day. :-)

Well, everybody knows that nuclear arms are as sensible as a missile defense - they are big penis substitutes for politicians of superpowers or "wannabe superpowers". Moderators, please don't delete this post, because it is down to the core of the problem. It is a "MINE SHALT BE BIGGER THAN THINE" situation.

There is no way that these missile defense systems will ever make sense strategically because - as has been pointed out earlier - there are dislocated systems (like submarines or third countries) for launching nukes and there is a general agreement that a nuclear exchange of blows has no winner and so on. The chances of actual success of a missile defence system also has not been proved sufficiently yet.

Both the US missile shield and the Russian threats (as well as the Iranian nuclear aspirations) are only directed at the inner political basis. Loudspeaking politicians try to win elections because they know that they do not win with considerate foreign politics as the populace doesn't give a damn about the situation in other countries if they don't have enough money to pay the monthly rent. But it boosts the ego, if Your country has military might.

Russia would do better in sticking to the START treaty (and the US as well). Nukes are expensive and useless. There is no (significant) difference in the threat from 500 or 5000 nukes. It is enough to obliterate human civilisation. Therefore a stepwise reduction of the arsenal saves money for both sides. Time for better substitutes (like a strong economy)...

Obama is laughing at Putin that a great nation like Russia couldn't even build its own missile shield that they have to meddle on someone else's.

America's decision to establish a NATO missile defense shield is just a pretext and the true objective of the shield is probably to threaten Russia and China. Since the proposal to establish an early warning system in Southeast Turkey, which is one component of the NATO missile defense system is probably a done deal, America is probably planning to establish other components of the new system in South Korea and Taiwan, which would indicate that America is probably using the alleged threat from Iran and North Korea as a pretext to target China and Russia. Therefore Iran, China and Russia is finally beginning to comprehend the level of danger by the new system and also realized that the time has come to seriously start discussions on the plan. Thus all three countries will most likely establish a joint missile defense shield as a counter weight to a NATO missile defense. Hence the progress made by the three countries in designing anti-craft defense systems in the past should help in the construction of a missile shield system but I think that's debatable.

What the Kremilin's message sending is simple: Either Iran or Syria under attacks by foreign forces, Poland, Czech, Romania..these home base radra station for NMD will be attacked as revenge!

Novenachama, dude the missile defense system (if built) might just might take out 10 missiles out of hundreds of inbound missiles, thousands of warheads. No threat at all, it is being used as political pap so the Russian people accept less freedom. Just threatening to give up the Start treaty reduces it value to nothing. Threatening to attack NATO defenses will force them to go on an alert status. So for politics Russia will start a new cold war, if it ever really ended.

Our president didn't threaten. Our president has publicly warned us that there has come time moment when negotiations from the NATO are useless. Certainly negotiations will be formally conducted. Our President will make everything that the NATO attacked us as it is possible later. However we can't avoid nuclear attack of the NATO. When attack will begin it is not known, but to cancel it not probably. 2000 the West regularly attacks last and plunders us. Thanks to the reference of the President we are psychologically ready to accept nuclear attacks of the NATO. That that should occur isn't possible to avoid. We will prepare little by little to survive after nuclear bombardment. At us in Russia the reference of the President almost don't discuss, because all for a long time all is clear. Sooner or later it should occur. Likely it became easier. Now there is a clearness and unambiguity. Negotiations of our management from the NATO very much раздражили. We know our western partners and all on what they are capable. I am assured that Japan won't suffer from nuclear bombardments of Russia. You have nothing to worry.
