to me, caning a Muslim according to the Islamic law doesn't hurt my view of malaysia at all.

i think the issue with non-muslim in that country can hurt her a lot more.

because i know a lot more ugly side of malaysia and its islamic ideology which often force applied on non-muslim or a muslim who want to leave the faith in that country for sometime already.

Moderate Malaysia - apparently not. At least she's not being stoned to death for being raped but that's about all you can say in Malaysia's defense.

Had she appealed, lawyers say, the caning would have been struck down and the case would have died a natural death.

What's the use of handing down the punishment of caning if it will be struck down on appeal?

By this woman's NOT appealing the case, Malaysia is being forced to re-evaluate it's legal system. I feel she has done more good for the system by doing nothing at all.

Rather than caning her, they should make her chug a yard glass.

Often the two sets of laws collide and the winner usually is the Islamic system. For example, a Muslim who converts from Islam is guilty of apostasy under Shariah laws—punishable by jail and fine—even though freedom of religion is guaranteed by the constitution.

FINALLY!! I'd given up ever thinking that this would at least be mentioned in an article on Shariah in Malaysia. Moderate it most definitely ain't.
