Good idea to stop the flow of weapons. It's machetes now, but could easily turn into guns later. The military must be more vigilant in supressing the violence. In recent years, Nigeria has made some economic strides but this could lurch the country back into turmoil.

"Armed with machetes" "Slaughtered" Geeezzzz. Where's the religion in that?

Another example of the benefits of religion; especially religions intolerant toward other religions. But, I suppose, if the violence weren't faith-based they would just as likely be race-based, or tribal-based, or caste-based.

As the article suggests, the roots of this conflict seem to be in a fight over resources/control over resources. Many of these divisions, such as traders coming from a particular ethnic group, date back to the good old colonial tradition of divide and rule, often by moving populations from one area to another and giving them exclusive priveleges. To really understand what's going on here, it would be necessary to know the history, rather than instantly labelling it religious intolerance.
> Jos lies in Nigeria’s “middle belt,” where dozens of ethnic groups mingle in a band of fertile and hotly contested land

With all the blood shed over the last 50-odd years, makes you wonder if Africa was much better off when it was ruled by Europeans. Or maybe they prefer to kill each other while being proudly independent...

Nigeria should just divide itself in 2, let Muslims on one side, and Christians on the other side and try to keep them away from each other. Too bad for Nigeria, but I guess if it were not a religious problem it would be tribal, if not tribal, some other problem like the rich vs. the poor etc..I hope that country can learn that this violence is not the answer.

Ironic that it is Obama who will, before his first and I predict only term is up, have to tell an already war-weary Muslim-wary American public that Africa is where Al Qaeda are focusing their efforts.

@moonbeams. My thoughts exactly. Now what religion condones this sort of killing, or any type of killing for that matter. They need to take a step back and read thier bible, koran or whatever writings they believe in. I seriously doubt that it mentions to machete to death everyone, includung children, that gets in the way of your beliefs.

No. This is the islamic push for Sharia rule, and it is not different from anywhere else in the world where islam meets non-islam. The same story is playing out in Nigeria, Sudan, Chechnia, the Philippines, Thailand, and any number of other places around the world.
See the big picture.

Nigeria and many more country in Africa can already do very well on the massacre and humanright record without a helping hand from religions.
now we add 2 of the 3 most retarded religion in the world, Muslim and Christian into that region, we will get something out of Hollywood action movie!
it won't be long before we see the christian start their love campaign by killing the peace lover Muslim in an equally gruesome number. it won't be long!
some time i really wonder how mankind could be originated from that continent and still survive till today. we should have kill off our kind to the point of extinction look ago!
