Am I right in thinking the police were acting more like paid employees of the mine than police? Dragging out barbed wire to coup up protesters or protect business property of the rich are really horrible ideas on all levels.

Two sides to that story:

1)If you watch the video a group of armed men (spears and machetes) snuck behind the cops and then leapt out of the bushes and charged. Bad idea. Maybe not completely thought through. The cops opened fire BIG TIME and ended the fight.

Heads will roll for that. Don't bring a spear to a machine gun fight.

2) Yes. The cops do act as thugs for hire for big business. The workers are wanting a raise from a shockingly low US$300-400 / month to whatever they get. In this case lead instead of gold.
