Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania called for a hearing on federal laws that require those who witness the sexual abuse of a child to report the crime to authorities.

What a suprise! A senator trying to ride on the coattails of this event! Why yes! One case catches worldwide attention, so make a brand new law on the basis of that one case. Won't be long before we have scores of college freshmen in jail because one 17 year old had sex with a 19 year old and some people saw and didn't report it. Just what America needs; an easy way to further fill its already packed jails and already clogged court system.

driveshaft.....the Penn State issue reflects a problem. There were a few people who were told of the abuses and those in position of power did nothing about it. Years passed and the ones who handed over the information never did anything when they realized nothing was being done. At that point you have to start wondering how many more kids were abused while no one did anything.

You messages seems more like paranoia directed at the government...

The hell with the Penn State football team!! This idiot Paterno is guilty of not calling the police in these horrible child molestation cases!!

Why is there no mention of the ages of these "kids"?? It's a University, but they are being referred to as kids??? Was it some kind of youth program?? University-age boys are not kids... they are old enough they should have punted this pedo in the nutz if he tried to touch them..

Jerry Sandusky is a sick old man. The ones that didn't notify police or the proper authorities are just as guilty if they knew what was going on.

The kids who were allegedly sexually abused were kids belonging to the Second Mile charity youth program that Sandusky founded and ran. The assaulted kids were mostly aged 10-12, not university-aged. You can read the disturbing details of the Grand Jury Findings of Fact at the link below:

The headline needs the word 'possible' or 'alleged'. We are not yet a lynch mob. The article does not back up what the title proclaims.

It's telling that you focused on those supplementary closing paragraphs on Senator Casey's grandstanding instead of the topic at hand, Sandusky's alleged pedophilia and victims. Read the Grand Jury Report yet? Might help your perspective.

Just started reading the report provided by USNinJapan2. No need to finish it. Not my cup of tea. Thanks for the link.

Legally, Coach Joe Paterno did the minimum of what was legally required - he reported it to his superiors who are supposed to report it to the specific office that deals with the police and investigation. So legally there, he's OK, and the police already stated he wouldn't be charged there.

What most people are questioning is morally has he done enough, such as making sure they followed through on the process. He's certainly open target for civil lawsuits.

There may be other areas where he could still be in legal trouble depending on what new evidence are discovered, such as if he knew about it while employing Sandusky.

As for Penn State, they certainly can't shut down a whole university for this. It has 44,000+ students and athletes studying and playing there who have nothing to do with this failure of its authorities. They're trying to make their own lives.

Wow...just, wow. I hope all these victims are telling the truth, but I believe they are.

You can't completely fault Paterno and you can't completely exonerate him, either. Not too many people would feel comfortable leading the charge to the police without going through higher ups in the university system. At the end of the day he's just the football coach, not a legal rep for Penn State. Others have the responsibility to deal with the police on behalf of the university and they were the ones who did not act.

Supposedly Paterno reported the incident then followed up a second time. After that it's hard to know what his responsibility is. It's one accusation from one person. And my guess is that he assumed the university investigated it since they have a duty to. It's rational t think that the university did investigate and did not find enough evidence, or found the accusation to be false, etc. We will never really know what they said to him. In th end it's hard to pass a sniff test, though.

These colleges are cult-like and preach nothing more than propaganda and devotion. The fact this pedophile raped young kids and was not reported to the police is a miscarriage of justice. Paterno is guilty for not contacting the police directly, and Sandusky is guilty of rape, rape, and rape. These idiotic college teens that think they know something about life and care more about football know absolutely nothing about real life. Football, and college sports is nothing more than an industry with slave labour. LIving in these college towns is a bubble of cult-like proportions.

You know what matter to colleges in the states? Money. Once you start messing with the money people start covering stuff up. Sandusky and Paterno are nothing more than draws for the big funders. Apparently Sandusky was also setting up some of the big money guys with his connection of young boys. Sick rapist needs to be put down.

"Football, and college sports is nothing more than an industry with slave labour."

Slave labor ? I am in no way defending the perp, Paterno or the university but it is clear you know next to nothing about college sports in America and football in particular.

Screw Paterno! And I hope they throw all of the sick perverts there at Penn state into a nice crowded PRISON with many LONELY prisoners!

jforce: Not paying the players in the biggest sporting business in the US is slave labour. And don't start with the "they get a free education argument" either.

OK, let's hear your plan for paying players. My school is pretty rich and famous. I have to admit I'm intrigued by the idea of buying the next 10 national championships.

Look this Paterno guy, says he is a loving father and grandfather of 17?? Something like 17 grandchildren, cool. Now, see if this old fart Paterno, say happened to hear or see that one of his own grand kids were being MOLESTED or sodomized at there school etc..would old fart Paterno wait?? Would he just wait and talk to some authority at his grand kids's school?? HELL NO!! He would have called 911, etc..RIGHT AWAY but in this case HE TURNED THE SO CALLED BLIND EYE and now he must pay for his sins of not having at least CALLED THE POLICE or CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES! Stupid idiot Paterno!
