“I am still in control and hold executive authority, so nothing much has changed,”
Yup.

So is Mugabe still a hero to the international Left?

Good old bob, doing his damndest to turn Zimbabwe into dust.
Why the hell hasn't he been snuffed off yet? 90% unemployment and this arsehole spunks a quarter of a million bucks to celebrate his 85 years of existance?

Mugabe has recently also spent big money on a house in the Hong Kongs new territories,so maybe he is planning to decamp shortly.lets hope so.

I thought he was a hero of the right? You know, nationalism, foreigners out, that sort of stuff. Guess it doesn't really matter because if you go far enough left or right, you end up roughly in the same place anyway.
What I can't believe is that Mugabe has been allowed to do this. He's virtually single-handedly destroyed a country. Where do we draw the line between sovereignty and the welfare of the people? Now, if only Zimbabwe had oil...

Redistribution of wealth an all that, sounds like a leftist to me. But you're right, his country which prior to him was healthy, and exported food, now is starving because of his land use policies. The policy of seizing farms from the people working them, and giving them to people who don't have a clue how to farm, is killing his people, and no one seems to care.

He was a hero for the left because he fought against European colonialism. The land distribution might be seen as a continuation of that struggle, if it weren't for the fact that Mugabe doesn't actually redistribute it to black farmers; despite the leftist rhetoric, all he does it give it to his cronies who don't know how to farm it. Nothing "progressive" about it.

Some people just parrot anything they read on their favourite hate blog. Over the years I've simply become acustomed to it's behaviour, and adapted.
