How do they know if you are Muslim or not? You could easily say "I gave it up this morning and celebrating now"... Some countries have seriously too much time on their hands to clamp down on how "religious" you are.

Spanked live on TV? What's so criminal about drinking liquor even as a Muslim? The trouble is Islam is getting more and more "notorious" in the eyes of the world and rightly or wrongly seen as a belligerent religion with Muslims ever ready to shout "Allah is Great" as a battle cry. If Muslims want the world to see their religion as peaceful, wise and good, it must practice more understanding and give Muslims especially Muslim women more freedom. Instead of punishing those who break Islamic laws, the so-called culprits should be counselled.

During the days of Prophet Mohamed, Muslim men were allowed to marry four wives mainly because many men were killed in battles and it was a kind deed to take care of women who have lost their husbands by marrying them and to treat them fairly.

Unfortunately, today in many countries, Muslim men take advantage of this by having four wives. Can Islam earn the respect of the world when such things continue to occur?

What is interesting is that no where in the Koran does it say that beer is not okay - nor does it mention more than one wife. All how you want to interpret it. I feel sorry for moderate Muslims who are getting tarred with this nasty brush. I agree, Malaysia is being a little scary with this. First they were banning performers and now they are flogging people for things that other citizens can do. If I were this women I would renounce my religion over it but we know that would cause a storm in a teacup.

Your religion is on your national ID card in Malaysia. If you are Malay you are Muslim by law, and you can never change. So, Malays cannot drink alcohol, ever. Lovely place, eh?

Seriously - flogged for drinking a cold one? Who wants to be a part of that? When will people realize that organized religions were all created by man to keep control over people (and build personal power and wealth)? It has nothing to do with your hoped for afterlife. I have nothing against believing in god (whatever your brand might be) but why not make it a just, kind and loving one rather than one who instructs its followers to beat each other if they drink a distilled beverage?

And Maple G you win the prize for hitting the nail on the head. It is the draconian attitude of Islam and its derivations, the hypocracy of western religions, and the inability of either side to see reason that means the world is forced to live in a constant state of division, mutual mistrust and open contempt. Give humanity another 2,000 years or so and maybe we'll have grown to that new level that can see the complete idiocy of caning a person for having a beer.

The government of Malaysia should immediately issue a pardon to Ms. Shukarno for drinking alcohol and then sentence her to double the number of strokes, harder, for being manipulative. It's completely obvious she's trying to attract as much attention to her situation as she can -- and succeeding. Let her spend a few days eating her supper off the mantelpiece as a fit punishment for her shameless self promotion.
