How cruel, barbaric & uncivilized? Victims will die on the roads & nowhere to go. Children needed to sit on the road and beg from passing cars. Local donors are not allowed to feed them. Even they have to bride the police for their donation effort. These people are not real homeless or beggars. The government is making them becoming the real beggars. They are the refugee of the Cyclone. They will die slowly in the open space without the help.

After his statements were reported, UNICEF issued a statement saying the remarks referred to “unconfirmed reports by relief workers **on the relocation of displaced people affected by” the May 2-3 storm. While saying there have been “promising indications that **the government is moving in an overall right direction,” the real test remains implementation on the ground, Skavdal said.

Now, this is the summary of this article. I dont think generals will allow their citizens to die otherwise how/whom they are going to rule?

"Nothing to see here. Move along!"

  • adaydream at 10:38 AM JST - 31st May

There's a lot to see here. It's just that we can't force our way in and do the right thing. Myanmar temporarily open their gates to the Chinese and a few selected aid groups. They weren't allowed much past the airports. And, stole the food for their own.

Unfortunitely you can't just walk in and do right, even when you know it's the right thing to do.

You just can't cross borders uninvited.

    Never again, eh?

You said "I dont think generals will allow their citizens to die otherwise how/whom they are going to rule?" Of course. normal legitmate government will not allow to die citizens mercilessly.

However these generals became government in 1988 with bloody masscare for killing the citizens. Back in 1988. there are no internet, mobile phones and GPS. The world did not see the real masscare.

However the world has witnessed the bloody crack down on the Buddhist monks in last year. Even unarmed Japanese Journalist was killed in cold blood by military police. You can view the dead bodies from CNN, BBC and other countless websites. Back in 2007, there was no cyclone.it was obvious that they did not die naturally. Besides that Myanmar citizens do not allow to carry the weapons like USA. i did not excergerrate in my comment.

Boglay, Laputta and some small towns of Irrawaddy delta become like that African poor nations. If you are really interested in Myanmar, you have to reserach before you comment.

Even in your home country China, there was 1989 bloody cracked down in Beijing. However China has changed a lot and getting better and modernized. Citizens are freer and more prosperous. Myanmar is still not! The government is so corrupeted, narrow minded and selfish.

Isn't it about time for the Junta to be relocated? Is anyone recognizing them as a legitimate government? If not, they need to be removed by whatever means necessary so the rightfully elected leaders of Burma can care for their people!

  • super delegate at 03:43 PM JST - 31st May

    Burma.

Britain broke it. Britain needs to fix it.

  • keshii at 05:09 PM JST - 31st May

And I'm sure that the Junta thinks that this is a really smart move to make them look like a legitimate government in the eyes of the international community.

adaydream - I hate to sound like a token american on this one, but personally, I think that hundreds of thousands of people dying needlessly is a lot worse than tens of thousand who would die from a war kicking the butts of a terrible regime like the Junta.

    Super_delegate;-

    Burma.

Military broke it since 1962. But no one can touch the military because of it's big brother, CHINA.

The forced evictions are part of military gov.'s efforts to demonstrate that the emergency relief period is over and that the effected popuation is capable of rebuilding their lives without foreign assistance.

Anupama Rao Singh, regional director of UNICEF, who visited the affected area , warned on Saturday against pemature resettlement,as it will cause serious risks to the refugees. "Many villages remain inundated with water. Without proper support and continued service to those effected, there is a risk of a second wave of disease and devastation" said Singh.

Military strong man Than Shwe has a well-earned reputation of ruthlessness and callousness. This time, though, he has left most people speechless with his total lack of humanity. The merciless generals are proving to the world how much they look down on the survivors."The people should learn to feed themselves," an official told donors."We do not want foreigners to think we are a country of beggars".Four weeks after the disaster, the UN says less than half of the 2.4 million people affected by the cyclone have received any form of help. On Friday, in a remarkable show of pomposity, the regime announced to the media that starvation is not an issue, because "farmers can gather water clover or go out with lamps at night and catch plump frogs, for food". The international community has sat back in its collective armchair and allowed the Burmese military junta to commit murder with impunity. YENI of Irrawaddy said, "If the cyclone victims can eat frogs then surely the UN can eat humble pie and admit to it's failings. If the world organs do not force their will over the Burmese regime, the people of the Irrawaddy delta will suffer a second catastrophe - a totally preventable manmade disaster."

Pauk;- you must add a few more words.

    Burma.

Burmese Military broke it since 1962. But no one can touch the Burmese military because of CHINA. So CHINA needs to fix it if she has some morality.

  • Jyan_Bon at 12:55 AM JST - 4th June

It is safer for an impassive Than Shwe to allow hundreds of thousands of villagers in the Irrawaddy delta region to die rather than permitting a US relief mission to save them—a deadly decision indeed.

Than Shwe knows full well that millions of Burmese wait in hope for the arrival of US warships, and not only for the relief supplies they would bring.
